The Invisible Chains in most democracy
I remember the first time I truly understood how power works in our world It wasn't while watching a political debate or reading some theoretical treatise but It was when my local community tried to oppose a new development project that would have destroyed our last green space. But Despite overwhelming public opposition the project was approved and the reason was a handful of powerful individuals with connections to local and federal government had vested interests. That's when it hit me that we might call our system democracy, but what we're living feels increasingly like oligarchy being rule by the few.
This realization sent me down a rabbit hole of research and reflection that changed how I see the world because what I discovered both frightened and motivated me I'm writing and talking about this not as an expert, but as an ordinary person who has come to understand that we're all affected by this silent concentration of power. This groups are small groups of wealthy individuals who marginalized poorer citizens from centers of power and What distinguishes oligarchy from other forms of government is that there's little opportunity for outsiders to enter the ruling ranks . Unlike representative democracies where elites must compete for public support oligarchies maintain closed systems of power just as we are seeing today on our current democracy.
I used to believe that voting was the ultimate expression of political power But then I learned about the research from past tenured and analysis from both universities, social media with news and radio station and that analysis policy outcomes finding has strongly indicated that the economic elites and organized groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on various Africa government policy" while average citizens have little or no independent influence so let that sink into your reality. Our preferences, our needs, our voices as ordinary citizens have statistically negligible impact on the policies that get enacted . This isn't about conspiracy theories it's about the structural reality of how influence works in our system.
The numbers are staggering with the wealthiest 1% of Leaders in Most countries are in possession of more wealth than the bottom 90% combined In just 12 months, the wealth of the 10 richest families anywhere in the world' being billionaires increased by $365 billion 150 billionaire families spent $1.9 billion on the elections in just a year. They already havee wealth Defense structure and there's an entire industry of lawyers, accountants, and lobbyists whose sole purpose is to protect their wealth . This structure creates offshore banks, shell companies, and secrecy jurisdictions that allow the ultra-wealthy to shield their assets from public scrutiny and taxation .
My Personal Awakening was Coming to understand these mechanisms so much with my own experiences I remember feeling particularly disillusioned when I learned about the revolving door between government and industry where regulators come from and return to the very industries they're supposed to oversee as It explained why so many policies seem to favor corporate interests over public ones. The picture I've painted might seem bleak but understanding the problem is the first step toward solving it throughout history, positive change has happened when ordinary people organize and demand better. By enforcing meaningful campaign finance reform to reduce the influence of big money in politics which includes promoting public financing of elections transparency in political spending, and reforms like ranked-choice voting that might weaken the two-party duopoly in every government.
I've come to believe that the struggle between democracy and oligarchy isn't just happening in the halls of power, it's happening in our minds in our communities and in our daily choices. It's present when we decide whether to accept things as they are or imagine how they might be different as
The path forward isn't easy but nothing worth fighting for ever is as I think back to that community struggle that first awakened me to these issues I realize that even though we lost that particular battle, the awareness it sparked was itself a kind of victory as I now see the system clearly, and that's the essential first step toward changing it.
