Rising Star Meme #35 - Mind Your Liquidity!

So you like them shiny Legendaries, don't you?
Maybe opening packs regularly to chance upon one as well...?
Well, here's a couple of good-to-know points about them...

First off, Legendaries are RARE (No Pun!)

Rising Star's Legendaries are super hard to get. You might have come here from Splinterlands and gotten confused over the term "Legendary", and think they have more or less the same acquisition rates in both games.

But, NO!!

A Rising Star Legendary Card's acquisition Rate is around the same as (or even less than) a Splinterlands Legendary Gold Foil - making them out of reach. Not to mention the Print Limit which is AT MOST 75 or something (typically 25).

In-Game Value

As you know, Rising Star is a game of Stacking and Growing your stats, so having more cards is always beneficial. But, trying to squeeze the most value out of your STARBITS is something you should always be doing or be doing subconsciously.

Legendary cards DO provide stats and ARE valuable, and their value is determined by their traits below (actually this is true everywhere, but is more prominent in Legendaries)

  • Utility (i.e. Stats - How much they help you in-game)
  • Unique-ness (Some players hunt that, so a tough market already)
  • Print Limit (Once they're gone, they're gone for good)
  • Being Legendary (Hard to acquire in the first place)

None of the previously mentioned traits can track a card's price in a numerical way, except the Utility which has to do with stats - which are numbers.

Their Market "Value"

Now this me doing some calculations and observations plus providing some historical examples.

50 STARBITS per Fan is the typical price you can find on the Marketplace. Applying that to John here for example (which has the highest Fan count in the game as of now - probably ever)

15,000 times 50 = 750,000 STARBITS Total (240 SWAP.HIVE with current rates)
But that's only considering the stats (no Print Limit consideration, no Uniqueness, no nothing, just pure stat-wise).

That draws a floor price for a Legendary card - every other "People" card has fewer Fans than John, but everything considered, it's still a solid floor price (I'd say it's even a bit low). For other Legendaries with lower Fans and Print Limits, 300 seems like a good one, too... actually with the price of STARBITS going up, it makes more sense to pay ~300

A little John history:
John was up for sale for 600 Hive (crazy price at the time - more than 3M SB I believe) and it stayed there for a while. No one thought it'd sell, but it actually did when a whale jumped in...

No, I'm Not Here to Pump

Actually, quite the opposite. I believe that liquidity is yet another thing to consider if you're not a collector/hoarder. Many try to sell off their Rare finds for profit, but one thing to consider is the fact that "The Rarer the card, the higher the price" AND "The higher the price of a card, the less liquidity it'll have" and it becomes harder to sell and more time-consuming to wait for a proper buyer.

True, a John is worth +600 Hive and it has been sold for even more than that, but that was a rare occurrence when a whale jumped in and rose up to rank 10 in a matter of weeks. I won't mention them, but the OGs remember that and you can ask them who it was :D

The bottom line is: A rational (not a collector) buyer (who is most probably gonna be the one buying from you) would consider as much before buying or investing in a Legendary.

Rising Star is on a bullish trend right now, so it's safe to assume that things will increase in price in the future, but I wanted to share my 2 cents on this idea.

Let me know if you agree or think otherwise, I'll be happy to read and discuss more ideas.
As always, take care and keep Rising.

Always keep collectors like me in mind. I don't buy Cards just to advance in the game but as a collection, as a tangible value, just like I buy old coins or paintings.

Yeah, Collectors imho are one of the groups of people who add value to a crypto game (the other being long-term investors).

The problem, however, is that there are not THAT many collectors... yet 👀.
When the game hits ~3000 solid collectors, that's when things start to get REALLY interesting...

and now it will rise more, thanks to the end of the supply.

Exactly, such a coincidence for John to run out of print the same day I make this post.

Now two things might happen:

  1. Either it has a massive spike in prices (due to the sheer hype and FOMO) and calms down a bit, and continues to move up.
  2. Or it just goes up continuously over time - which is the possibility that I'm rooting for.
