I never cared about the side characters in the movie -- went to see the giant lizard and ape beat each other -- I wasn't disappointed.

I feel you on that, it was so good that I watched another monster movie afterwards "Rampage". Which really turned out to be more of an adventure movie than a monster movie but hey!
