With you in that believe social media is the scourge of society. Like you, I keep farcebook and others because older relatives and friends still use them.

on occasion I will pop in there to see if people are still bitching about politics thinking that anyone actually cares what their opinion is and sure enough, that does still seem to be the primary delusion of a lot of people on there. I don't last long when scrolling though because it is just disappointing and sad.
People that mostly talk about politics were removed from my feeds long ago.
I did the same. Unfortunately some of the people I couldn't remove were people I was actually interested in staying in touch with. It's remarkable how defensive they become when I tell them that it is kind of embarassing to see the posts they make and how they should cut it out and use that time to dedicate to really, anything else at all.
I let the occasional post go by, but when it is all the time, I just delete them. No interest in staying in touch if that is all they talk about.
i did a purge a while ago. Since I only use it to contact about 20 people or so. If I didn't immediately recognize their names, I deleted them.
