The price of Hive is a bit more complex than this. The number is not only about Hive but also the base price you are pricing in. There is no bank or institution where I can deposit dollars or hand over dollars and get Hive. Bitcoin is not only a store of value but it is also the unit of account for cryptos on exchanges. So, you can almost say the number depends on both assets, but it is even more complex than that.

There is a buy price and a sell price. The price you can buy something for is higher than the price you sell for. Right now over at Bittrex Hive's lowest price you can buy it for is 2,514 satoshis and the best price you can sell it for is 2,214 satoshis. So some might say there are two prices, but it is even more complicated than that.

You have a column of offers to buy in green on the left, which is the best price you can sell for if you want to sell immediately, and a column of offers to sell on the right in red, which is the best price you can buy for.

At the top of the list we have 2,214 satoshis/Hive but the problem is you can only sell 22 Hive at that price. The price goes down the more you want to sell. If you want to sell 322 Hive, you sell 22 Hive at the price of 2,214; and then sell 300 Hive for the price of 2,210.

You may Sell amountYou may Sell Price
22 Hive2,214
300 Hive2,210

Now in order to get the price in dollars, you must divide the 'you may sell price' by the 'you may buy USD for price' (aka you may sell BTC for price). We call this depth. If you are selling 20 Hive you have one price, if you are selling 2000 Hive, you have another. Then the price also depends on what exchange you are going to as well

Often Bittrex doesn't have the ability to make withdrawals to Hive or HBD and so the price is poison to the average or in the case of Upbit some people can use that if they speak Korean so in that case the price is not the same as fiction but it is useless to me.

Where are you getting your dollar prices from? Is it CoinGecko? If you are calculating them how?

Great information! I just check the price on the peakd wallet page. I know that Hive price is more like an estimation of value based on how many satoshis you can trade some Hive for. I use Bittrex a bit but they disable withdrawls for Hive and HBD all the time, which is really annoying. I would love to know how to figure out the math about it more, but I generally try to acquire more HIVE and more HBD, and more BTC in the long run too. I am a Canadian but am much happier saving HBD than fiat CAD loonies.

I am also Canadian. I don't live there. There are several laws I'd see removed before I would think about moving there permanently and it keeps getting worse instead of better. I've patiently waiting days for a rise in the Hive price to sell them for HBD. I hate to sell low, so I'll give it some more time. I am missing out on pools though. I wont wait that much longer.

Yeah things are tough this year, I am further behind than I was at the beginning of last year but what is different is that things are sort of open right now. I have little reason for optimism but overall Steem/Hive has been a productive distraction from social decay. I like what you did with proofofbrain blog, I am still trying to figure out how to get my website hooked back up to Hive after the fork.
