Balancing Punishment and Reward for a Near-Perfect Child Upbringing
I remember a few weeks back we wrote here in this community on the role of punishment; physical punishment in raising a child, whether it's okay or not to punish a child employing physical punishment. The discourse in that post for me drew a point where physical punishment is helpful and necessary, but in love and not extreme measures. The discourse here considers punishment and reward systems in child upbringing. What about it?
Do children learn better when you punish them for their bad behaviour or when you reward them for their good behaviour? Will one affect the other? Will the absence of one be an issue? Is a balance the solution? These are the questions that surround this discourse. How should this subject of child upbringing be addressed in this regard, as it's obviously an important one that shouldn't be ignored or taken for granted? Not in today's world especially.

Punishment is important, and many of us are evidence of this statement. When a child goes wrong, punishment serves as a corrective measure, which should be done in love not anger, bitterness or hate. This could involve some manual labour, not necessarily striking the child. They could be deprived of some of their gadgets, the things they like to do, and places they like to go. Nevertheless, physical punishment is sometimes needed and should be employed.
What happens then when a child behaves himself/herself in a good way that's seen and commendable? While this isn't usually taken into consideration, a little reward can help. That will serve as an encouragement to keep up with the good behaviour. But it shouldn't be constant or too often, so the child doesn't feel the need to only behave themself because of the reward. This should also be made clear to the child while rewarding them.
A balance is what's needed. To correct them through punishment is right and okay. To also encourage them through rewards is good and nice. In today's world, the absence of one could probably affect the effort of raising a child well. A child should know that his/her good behaviours are seen, recognised and encouraged as well as his/her wrong behaviours are noticed, not tolerated and certainly corrected and disciplined. That balance will help.
The problem is when parents go extreme on either end, perhaps neglecting the other. When a child is punished so much, at the slightest wrong (neglecting the good behaviours), such a child becomes fearful of them and can even lose confidence. When a child is so much rewarded for every good behaviour or not (neglecting the bad behaviours), you can be sure a spoilt child is being raised, one who also expects rewards and applause for doing their duty.
One of the difficult things about parenting is that there isn't a one-size-fits-all model for it. There could be some distinct efforts in raising a child. Nevertheless, we can point to some basics as standards at least. Parenting today should be clear on bringing up children who are responsible, disciplined and confident; who are certain about wrong and the punishment for that, as well as children who know what's right and are encouraged to continue in it.

You are absolutely right, we just need to strike a balance, I believe disciplining kids for correction and rewarding them when they do something good helps in raising responsible and well behaved kids.
Thank you Vanilla. Yes, that helps in raising responsible and well behaved children.

It's important to strike a balance between punishment and rewarding kids. So one won't out take over the other.
Yeah, that's important.
Thank you.
