Client Privilege: What Happens When Lives Are at Stake?
One of the biggest things in life is trust. People would cherish and value a thousand times more one whom they could trust. The case of client privilege is one that revolves around trust and confidentiality. When a client says something to a professional whom they need for their services, it goes beyond just confidentiality and trust here. But because they needed help and they're certain the information they reveal will be kept secret, they're able to reveal it.
Trust and confidence in a loved one to keep information isn't something most people would even buy into. But they find themselves in a situation where they have to say what they need to so they can get the services they need. I'll say that many may prefer to keep the secret and not seek help, or lie rather if there wasn't that client privilege as a system in place. This shows the influence and importance of client privilege.

However, it becomes a burden when a professional is faced with the option of breaking this client privilege they're meant to offer to protect their secret when that information could save lives. It's more like a case of trust and betrayal; not a situation one would like to be at the end of. People with some health challenges maintain their secret with doctors, those with cases with lawyers, and even those who make confessions to priests.
In all the cases, they do so with trust and confidence in these personalities and professionals to keep it secret. It's however a big deal when the case of saving lives is involved. Do they break this privilege and offer the information to potentially save lives, or stick to the confidence entrusted to them to keep the secret? It's not an easy black-and-white answer. On one hand, you'll be keeping a trust, on the other hand you'll be saving lives.
Obviously, anyone who knows the value of life will consider that saving lives is worth it. Especially when we're talking about many lives. But it's easier said than done if we're honest. I know the value of trust and certainly, that betraying it doesn't feel good if you have a conscience. This could also mean a stain on the individual's professional or vocational life. But if that could save lives, I believe it could do them some good when people find out why.
In the event a need arises to break this client privilege, it should be that the professional tries to advise the person about doing the needful, that's making known what needs to be known by themself. They should make them understand the need to do so. I consider that, such will show they value the trust in them to keep what they told them confidential. But also implying that there's a bigger demand at hand and perhaps, it's time to let the cat out of the bag.
A world without client privilege will probably be one that has people not seeking the help or services they need because they're not certain about confidentiality. Be it the doctor, lawyer, or priest. Without that, people might also resort to being insincere which might just cause more problems or troubles for them and others. Yes, some of the things could be bad, but it's up to the professional who decides to entertain such and provide their services.

I think the bottom line is to speak to their morals so that they will come forward with their crimes. However, crimes against children may have a different approach.
Yeah, speak to them about that. Didn't think about that in particular, but yes, that too.
Thank you.
