Student Loans: Opportunity or Future Burden?

One of the very important sectors of a nation is the education sector. A nation's corporate workforce, present and future depends on this sector, and it also plays a role in the nation's development and advancement. It's rather sad that it's not being properly and duly given the attention and value it needs and deserves. This is living proof in many countries of the world. And as time goes by, the sector keeps deteriorating.

Today, education and school are made to look like a waste of time because of reasons like this. This is why there are some popular statements attesting to that. All because concern wasn't given to this important sector, making it a joke or something unworthy to spend one's time and resources on. When you look around and see how people are struggling, it makes it hard not to accept those claims and statements. What could be the problem?

It's obviously the lack of value and concern for the education sector by those in charge and the government of the nation at large. But that's not even the case here. This post is on the subject of student loans and what that means to the students who receive these loans in the long run and the future. Is it a benefit or a future burden? Is this a problem for many already or has it been a wonderful and laudable development?

Some time back, I heard of the student loan idea in my country. It seemed like just talk and wouldn't really come alive. Well, it did, as a new development under the umbrella of helping students who have it difficult with finances so that it wouldn't deter their education. Some information then made it discouraging, especially the interest and repayment issue. It's already a development set into action that one might say is actually benefiting some students.

No, there's no interest applied and the start of repayment seems considerable. One might say then that this development should be applauded, for how it must have been beneficial to many students and how considerate it might have been. We can applaud that. But I wish to look further beyond that, to see and say that if there was actual concern, value and intentional effort towards the education sector, it probably wouldn't have come to that.

Or rather, if the government was really being a government that serves its people, we wouldn't have difficulties and situations that would warrant this same government giving loans to students to help them in their education. What happened to free education? Wasn't it possible? It was possible and can still be today. The problem is we have people in government and in the education sector who don't really value it. How about how to pay back the loan?

For a country where job and employment opportunities are nothing to write home about, it means a future burden for beneficiaries of this loan. When a loan is collected, it's usually to gain from it and pay it back through it. This won't be the case for many, thereby creating a future burden rather than help. And considering clearing the loan through payment of more taxes to offset it shouldn't be the case. Not when those in charge can fix or make the system better.
