Memes. Yup, we all love them. Honestly, it's one of 'em things that keeps us online for so long that we forget where we are. I mean, come on, I want you to mention someone that doesn't love memes down in the comments below.

Hello everyone, I'm Ifeanyi. Welcome. Today, after so much research, I'll be taking you on a walkthrough on the top 10 most popular memes that have ever existed. There are so many memes out there that are competing for the top spots, while others always retain their spots in all lists I've studied. In essence, this was a tough list to put together. It's not based on real numbers. It's all based on online ranking and then my final decisions. So, grab a popcorn would ya. Let me know how many of these memes you know;

10. Condascending Wonka

Only one of the countless movie scenes that have been turned into memes, Condascending Wonka is a picture meme taken out from one of the scenes of the famous 1971 movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (wow, 1971; and I first watched it around 2010) where late Gene Wilder who plays as Willy Wonka in the movie answers a question asked by one of the children in the factory. The meme which emerged in 2011 is a perfect one for expressing sarcasm.

9. Pepe the frog

Number 9 goes to only our favorite frog, Pepe the Frog. The picture meme which started becaming viral from 2008 consists of a green anthropomorphic frog with a humanoid body. Pepe was drawn by an artist Matt Furie and has been used in countless memes to signify different emotions such as sadness and vibrance, as a result of the different variants of the frog.

Used as a meme used to give someone a "wise advice," the Roll Safe meme gained a lot of traction in 2017. The picture meme features a scene of the series Hood Documentary where British actor Kayode Ewumi taps his fingers on his head.

7. Coffin Dance

I am a hundred percent sure that you were expecting to see this one on the list. 2020 would have not been complete without the Dancing Pallbearers video meme A.K.A Coffin Dance meme. Originating from Ghana, this meme gained a lot of traction from March 2020 when the video was edited and paired with the EDM song Astronomia by Tony Igy. It shows a group of black undertaker's carrying a coffin on their shoulders while dancing. It was most popularly used on TikTok to depict Fail videos where the person who experienced the fail in the video supposedly died.

Coming up at number 6 is another picture meme picked from a movie scene, the One does not simply meme. It shows Boromir- who is played by Sean Bean- from Lord of the Rings (Fellowship of the Rings) from a scene where he is making a circular shape with his fingers and exclaims, "One does not simply walk into Mordor." The meme gained traction in 2012.

5. All your base are belong to us

The meme, All your base are belong to us is originated from the opening cutscenes of the 1989 video game Zero Wing. It is based on a badly translated phrase in the scene as the game was translated from Japanese to English. The meme gained traction during the 2000's to 2010

4. Troll face

It's close to impossible to not have seen this face before. The Troll face meme is a comic meme sketched on Microsoft by Carlos Ramirez, an 18-year old Oakland student in September 19th 2008. It became viral a few months after Ramirez posted the image to the imageboard website 4chan and other users started to share it. As the name implies, it's used in memes where someone trolls another person.

3. Grumpy Cat

First appearing in 2012, Grumpy Cat made waves on the web with countless variants of the meme featuring countless headings. It features a cat which looks grumpy- as the name implies. The meme is used to express hate, annoyance, indifference or sarcasm in an amusing way. It originated when Tabatha Bundesen's brother posted a picture of her cat to Reddit and in two days, the pic had been viewed over a million times, according to Business Insider. Source

2. Doge

No other dog deserves the spot at number two than our favorite Shiba Inu Doge. Becoming a viral meme in 2013, the first picture was released in 2010. It features the dog with a somewhat surprised expression on it's face, and various multicolored text in Comic Sans font representing a soliloquy/internal monologue by the dog.

1. Rickroll

Of course you were expecting this one at number one. It's none other than the famous Rickroll. How many times have you been rickrolled? It's an internet meme prank where an unexpected appearance of the 1987 music video of Rick Astley's famous Never Gonna Give You Up suddenly pops up after you've maybe clicked a link (promising you something else) or been expecting something else at the end of a video and then get this instead (it's can be so annoying). Astley himself has been rickrolled multiple times. It grew popular in 2007 during April Fools and was later on used countless times after then (even till now).

Well there you have it. My own list of the best memes ever. Of course there are countless more amazing memes like Tuxedo Winnie the Pooh, 60's Spiderman, U Mad Bro, etc. However, these are the ones I believe deserve their spots. Did I miss any? Drop a comment.
