International Labour Day Celebration; the case study of Cameroon, in Africa
Hello my dear friends and audience of this darling space community. Today l come again to share with you, on the celebration of the international labour day, focused on Cameroon. This international holiday is observed on May 1st. It is most commonly associated as a commemoration of the achievements of Labour movement. The holiday may also be known as international Workers Day or May Day and is marked with a public holiday in over 80 countries including Cameroon.
° Historically it is alleged that the first May Day celebrations that focused on workers, took place on May 1st 1890 after it's proclamation by the first international Congress of socialist parties in Europe on July 14, 1889 in Paris, France to dedicate May 1st every year as the "worker Day of international Unity and solidarity".
✓ This date was chosen due to events on the other side of the Atlantic. In 1884 the American Federation of organized Trades and Labour unions demanded an eight-hour workday, to effect as of May 1st 1886. This resulted in the general strike and the Haymarket ( in Chicago ) Riot of 1886, but eventually also in the official sanction of theeight-hour workday.
✓ Actually, May 1st is celebrated as May Day in most countries around the world. In the united Kingdom and Ireland the bank holiday is not fixed on May 1st but it is instead observed on the first Monday of May.
✓ Infact international Labour Day is celebrated differently but in all focusing on the achievements of Workers. In America for example, many Americans celebrate Labour Day with parades and Parties , but festivities are similar to other countries, which suggests that the day should be observed with a street parade to exhibit"the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labour organizations" of the community.
√ As a matter of fact, Labour Day is often associated with the colours of the American flag: red, white, and blue. These colours not only represent the nations spirit but also pay homage to hardwork and sacrifices of the American workers.
° Labour Day Celebration; the case study of Cameroon:
✓ Cameroon joined the international Community on Thursday 1st May 2025, to celebrate International Labour Day, on the theme: "Social Dialogue and Decent Work for a peaceful Cameroon". This Day in Cameroon is a public holiday, allocated in recognition of the working class. And adding more weight to the celebration of this day, the Cameroon Human Rights commission held a celebration with the theme Social Dialogue and Decent Work for a peaceful Cameroon.
✓ The 139th edition of **International Labour Day, in Cameroon was celebrated in all the ten regional headquarters, and some divisional headquarters in the Country. Focusing on Yaounde the administrative headquarters of Cameroon the day portrays a bird's-eye view of what happened in the other divide of the Country ( that's the Francophone section ). The celebration brought the administrative authorities, leaders of workers trade union and workers of the private and public sectors. Among other presentation, there was a call for genuine social dialogue between employers, employees, workers trade unions and the State in order to maintain decent work.
After the exposees, there was long hours of parade by workers of different sectors showcasing their know how. After the different activities, the festivities moved to Parties hosted by the employers to their employees to show appreciations and demonstrate the workers achievements.
✓ And in Bamenda the regional headquarters of the north west region, Cameroon, the 139th edition of the international labour Day was held at the commercial avenue that host the grandstand. In the presence of the regional boss , the governor Adolf Lele l'Afrique and his collaborators. In Bamenda the May Day celebrations was marked by splendor, colour and vibrant display of Unity and resilience despite the crisis that has held the region captive with armed militia and the military facing each others, while the civilians are caught in the crossfire. Due to this, workers from various sectors broke the odds and gathered at the City grandstand to participate in the parade demonstrating their bravery and resilience. The were seen dressed in colourful attires carrying banners with inscription representing their institutions, unions. They matched in solidarity demonstrating their Unity of purpose and hoping their voices are head through the different labour unions representing them in the call for "social dialogue and decent work for a peaceful Cameroon" the theme for labour day, 2025.
° Infact Labour Day honours "Workers devotion and hard work while remembering their difficulties and endless efforts around the world". The purpose of this day is to raise awareness of workers rights, stop exploitation and promote equitable salaries and improved working conditions.
