One thing that has always kind of scared me about attempting to move to Japan is what you just said. I know that not ALL of it is super expensive, but it is a great deal more than down here. Honestly, Vietnam kind of ruins you in regards to how much you think things should cost. We went to the movies the other day in a very modern theater to a new release and the tickets were $3. It was a weekend, during peak hours... so this means that it must be considerably less if you are willing to go during off-peak hours. I have heard stories that movies are absurdly expensive in the west now.
Anyway, I still may visit Japan for as long as they let Americans have a tourist visa in the future. I don't know if living there would be possible for me though.
Are they? They are crazy here so I can't imagine the US being much worse. It will be over ¥3000 for a movie most of the time. Maybe more. At the current exchange rate, that is crazy enough, but back when ¥100 was $1, it felt even more insane.
Prices for streaming are more normal, but if you want to then buy that movie on DVD? You are looking at ¥8000-¥9000. Insane doesn't behind the cut it.
$80 for a DVD? wow
