Freewrite || Dusk on a Rice Field Road

This afternoon the sky was overcast, but beneath the gray clouds, a faint orange glow slowly appeared on the western horizon. A gentle breeze carried the scent of wet earth from the newly irrigated rice fields. The small road between the rice paddies was quiet, except for the occasional sound of motorbike engines and the light laughter of farmers resting.

I paused for a moment at the side of the road, gazing at the horizon where the sun was about to set. In front of me, several people were engaged in casual conversation. One leaned against a bicycle, while another stood holding a green water bottle in his hand. Their faces were serene, as if enjoying a brief moment after a long day of work in the fields. They might have been sharing stories about their crops, the changing weather, or simply sharing a joke to soothe their fatigue.

The afternoon atmosphere in the countryside always has its own way of calming the heart. There was no hustle and bustle of traffic, no city noise just the sound of crickets, the splash of water in the rice paddies, and the whisper of the wind touching the young rice leaves. In the distance, a small house stood among rows of coconut trees, as if a silent witness to the simple life that continues day after day.

I felt how precious this kind of tranquility is. Often we are too busy chasing something far away, when true beauty lies all around us in simple conversations by the edge of a rice paddy, in the warm smiles of fellow farmers, or in the gradually darkening color of the evening sky.

It was getting dark, but the mood felt warm. Perhaps this is what happiness is, without having to search too far simply being present, enjoying the moment, and being grateful for a day that has been lived through with work and sincerity. 🌾
