So, technically, the "downside" is that you create a fragmented user experience. You force legitimate users who might share an IP range or a behavioral pattern with the "blocked" list into a labyrinth of connectivity issues, while the actual bad actors LOL simply move to a different door. You build a fence around a garden that has no walls, believing you have secured the perimeter when you have only inconvenienced the guests.
The Strategic Blunder
But the deeper issue—the one that truly matters—is not technical. It is strategic. And it is fatal.
To try and block the truth is a bad idea when you know you have been exposed.
Why? Because blocking is an admission of guilt.
When you curate access, when you filter nodes, when you decide who can speak to the chain and who cannot, you are no longer operating a decentralized network. You are operating a centralized service with a decentralized backend. You are telling the world, "We cannot win the argument, so we will cut the microphone."
The Streisand Effect of the Ledger
And here is the cruel irony of the blockchain: You cannot block the record.
Even if you block the so called spammers from your RPC node, their transaction still exists. It is still in the blocks. It is still visible to anyone running a full node, anyone using a different API, anyone looking at the raw data. By trying to hide it, you do not erase it; you highlight it. You draw a bright red circle around the very behavior you claim to despise.
You expose yourself as the censor. You reveal that your commitment to "decentralization" ends where your comfort begins. You show the world that you are not protecting the network from spam; you are protecting your narrative from scrutiny.
The Loss of Trust
In the digital age, trust is the only currency that matters. And trust is fragile.
When users realize that the "public" nodes are actually private filters, designed to silence specific voices or hide specific transactions, they leave. They do not argue. They do not protest. They simply migrate to platforms where the architecture itself prevents this kind of manipulation. They go to places like Blurt.blog, where there is no downvote button, no node filtering, and no central authority deciding what is "truth" and what is "spam."
They leave because they realize that if you can block a spammer today, you can block a dissenter tomorrow. And once that precedent is set, the game is over.
The Final Word
So, the downside is not that the spam LOL continues. The downside is that you lose the moral high ground.
You prove that you are not confident in your own system. You prove that you are afraid of the truth. And you prove that the "decentralized" dream you sell is nothing more than a controlled experiment in human obedience.
Don’t block the truth. Don’t block the spammers LOL. Let them speak. Let the ledger record them. And let the community judge them by their actions, not by your filters.

And here is the cruel irony of the blockchain: You cannot block the record.
Even if you block the so called spammers from your RPC node, their transaction still exists. It is still in the blocks. It is still visible to anyone running a full node, anyone using a different API, anyone looking at the raw data. By trying to hide it, you do not erase it; you highlight it. You draw a bright red circle around the very behavior you claim to despise.
You expose yourself as the censor. You reveal that your commitment to "decentralization" ends where your comfort begins. You show the world that you are not protecting the network from spam; you are protecting your narrative from scrutiny.
The Loss of Trust
In the digital age, trust is the only currency that matters. And trust is fragile.
When users realize that the "public" nodes are actually private filters, designed to silence specific voices or hide specific transactions, they leave. They do not argue. They do not protest. They simply migrate to platforms where the architecture itself prevents this kind of manipulation. They go to places like Blurt.blog, where there is no downvote button, no node filtering, and no central authority deciding what is "truth" and what is "spam."
They leave because they realize that if you can block a spammer today, you can block a dissenter tomorrow. And once that precedent is set, the game is over.
The Final Word
So, the downside is not that the spam LOL continues. The downside is that you lose the moral high ground.
You prove that you are not confident in your own system. You prove that you are afraid of the truth. And you prove that the "decentralized" dream you sell is nothing more than a controlled experiment in human obedience.
Don’t block the truth. Don’t block the spammers LOL. Let them speak. Let the ledger record them. And let the community judge them by their actions, not by your filters.
