Not a fan of 'rule by force' but I do know that violence is a corrective force in nature. Hence dogs nipping their pups to teach them the rules, birds attacking snakes to keep them away from their nest and so forth.

That said though, only humans and some big cats will kill (or do violence) just for sport.

Psychopathic Humans.  Most of Us would NOT "kill (or do violence) just for sport."  1% of Us across the board are primary (genetic) psychopaths.  Born incapable of feeling caring, compassion, love, or empathy for Others.  Feeling no remorse.  Lusting after power over Others as a rule.

Secondary (conditioned) psychopathy emerges in societies run by primary psychopaths (as We see today) as People shut off Their caring, compassion, love, and empathy so as to "succeed," survive, and/or cope.

And what puts the psychopaths at the top?  Their single tool to power is money - it buys all the rest They use, the things and the People.  In moneyed societies, the psychopaths are always promoted.

In the rare cases where People lived in abundance, energy accounting (money) did not develop.  The caring Ones took care of things, there was no poverty, and the societies were cooperative, happy, creative, and loving.

Psychopaths are far from the only folks willing to do violence regardless of if they are the ones that get the most attention for it.
