Murphy's Law: Listen To Your Intuition
The statement,"whatever can go wrong, will go wrong" carries a very negative connotation, but I think it's an important lesson about life that offers us the chance to learn from our own intuition and listen to that small voice that occasionally comes to us from nowhere.
Negative Use
Of course, it can be used negatively, and individuals can use this as an example of how we shouldn't get our hopes up. Murphy's Law can be misused as a way of bringing people back down to earth. To not allow themselves to believe everything is going to be okay.
It can be used to ensure that we think of everything. Every possible way something can fail. Every possible way a particular idea could go wrong. By focusing heavily on the bad, we may sometimes lose sight of the good. We may lose sight of how we may succeed.
This idea can work to help us prepare, but it can also limit ourselves and turn our own minds against us. We are manipulated by the ideas of others, rather than listening to ourselves. Our own gut. Or, our own intuition.
Intuition
Intuition is such an interesting thing and there isn't really a science to it. We have this superpower - if we can call it that - which - if listened to - can aid us in so many ways throughout our lives in matters both large and small.
I have heard it said that the best way to hone our own intuition is by listening to it, and acting upon it where possible. Sometimes we just get a bad feeling or a 'gut feeling' that something isn't right.
Example - this has happened to me a bunch of times. I see a glass sitting near the edge of the counter. It is there all night, but at one point I notice it, I get a thought that the next person to walk by it is going to knock it off the edge. I shake my head and ignore it, only to hear a crash a few minutes later.
That's an example of what Murphy's Law is. It's that moment you notice something and get a sudden thought about a bad thing that is going to happen. It doesn't come from you. You can't force yourself to notice it or get these thoughts, it just happens.
After a lot of situations like this, I've taken to heed these thoughts whenever they occur, by moving the glass or phone when intuition hits me.
It's a double-edged sword though, because, how are we supposed to know if it worked or not if we moved the object and stopped it from falling? Well, we don't know, we just have to trust that had we not moved it, it would have been broken.
Why Did I Make This Post?
A while ago, I lent my acoustic bass out to some mates to use. Now, this was done about 2 or 3 years ago, and while it may have been gone for a long time, I didn't exactly need it back so left it with them.
Recently me and the lads have been talking about recording an acoustic album that will have some alternate folky versions of our songs, plus a few other ones that never made it onto our previous albums. So, I contacted the others about getting my bass back and was informed that it fell and the neck broke.
As you can see by these two pictures, the damage isn't too noticeable and so far I haven't had any trouble with it holding its tune. I may just need to tune it multiple times per session, and while that's annoying, at least I'll still be able to use it for the recordings.
I was disappointed but was told that it had been brought to someone who repaired it, and regardless of the damage, it was in working order.
Luckily, the break is at the head of the instrument rather than the actual neck.
It came back and the person who had it at the time of the break told me that he had a bad feeling about having it in his house because he thought it would fall and break. Sure enough, it was left in his one of the nights and after he left the room, he heard a crash.
Intuition is something we really need to listen to when the moment comes to us, as it's usually a glimpse into the future and a chance to act on something before it happens.
Gut Feelings
It's interesting that we have this entity in our bodies that acts independently from our minds. As if we have a second mind of sorts that tells us when it's hungry.
Every other action in our lives is determined by our brain, our gut however interrupts our thoughts to tell us what it needs. I don't know if there is any correlation between our stomach being an independent mind living in our body and these thoughts that come from - seemingly - nowhere.
Some people say that intuition is us receiving messages from the spirit world but who really knows? Maybe our stomach is the portal to the other realm.
Manifestation
There have been countless times when I am going about my daily life, where suddenly someone pops into my head who I haven't seen, spoken to, or thought about in years, and sure enough, within a few minutes I bump into them in the street.
It has happened countless times, and each time it does happen it amazes me. I don't know why it happens, but I do have a theory.
If our consciousness is an energy field that connects us all, then perhaps it can see between time. We perceive time differently than it actually is.
The past, present, and future all exist at the same time, and all three collapsing on each other is what gives us the illusion that time is moving, but in reality, it isn't.
So, if the future has already happened, then maybe intuition is a glitch, similar to De Ja Vu. If it already happened, then we have already lived the experience, so we can be forewarned prior to an event taking place and be given the option to change the future of our timeline, which creates a break from the future where the bad thing happened.
It's so interesting to think about this sort of stuff. If I flip a coin, the chance of it landing one way or the other is 50-50, which means that the coin flip results in two timelines. Heads, and tails.
Think of every single time you listened to your intuition and changed the course of your own future, or decided to ignore it and remain on the current timeline that already saw the results. Think of all 7 or 8 billion people on the planet who make these decisions daily, and imagine the sheer amount of timelines there may possibly be. Infinite.
I don't really believe in alternate universes, where we could possibly all be dogs, and all dogs on the planet are Humans. But, it does make for some fun ideas. Timelines though, I do think are real; because it makes sense - in a messed up kind of way - and we can imagine it.
"If you can imagine it, it is possible." - ???... This is strange, I always thought Albert Einstein said this, or at least something to that effect.
There is a quote from him regarding imagination, "I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world." - Albert Einstein
I've used the first quote so many times throughout my life, and have always kept it as a personal motto, especially when thinking. Sadly though, it doesn't exist.

This was an interesting read. I'm sorry for your broken bass, it was not nice of them not taking care of it, but what can you do. And yes, intuition exists. I am experiencing it every day.
That's it, there's not alot I can do about it, it's as much my fault for lending it out. But, at least they got fixed, and he gave me 100 Euros for the trouble. They're good guys, and didn't do it on purpose. So long as I can record the album with it, I'll be happy.
Yeah, intuition is a pretty big part of my life too, and any time a thought pops into my head I act on it, whereas when I was younger I'd ignore it.

Awesome read, I really enjoyed it and resonated with me so much. So many times I experienced exactly what you wrote regarding the glass and then someone knocking it off. As if life was scripted, determined.
And it is such a shame, your bass guitar. I have had nightmares about lending either my books or golf equipment to people. The few times I have lent my things, it came back in a different state than when I gave it to the friends. Such a shame that people cannot look after your things, even if it was really just an accident. I hope that it is still playing well. Thanks for sharing!
I'm glad you enjoyed the read and were able to connect with it. It really does feel like everything is pre-determined to a certain extent.
If I can use it for this upcoming album I'll be delighted, but it may just need a re-tune every couple of minutes/ hours.
I'm in two minds now about lending anything out in the future. My dad was saying that the best thing todo is lend stuff our you don't mind not seeing again/ getting broken, to be honest, I think I'l stick to that idea moving forward.
It's a Tanglewood bass, so while it's not a really high-end one, it's still mid-level. I wouldn't hold it against the lads, because they're good guys and I get on well with them.
Oh yes, that is the best philosophy. Lending only what you can lose. The same goes for investing money I guess, only invest what you can lose.
I really hope that you can play with it without too much frustration.
Keep well!
That sucks to hear about the guitar dude! Accidents happen sadly and sometimes one of our prized possessions are the victim.
I’m always on the lookout for the glass on the counter situation, especially with a kid lol. I don’t trust anything anymore and the only time I leave something is if I’m just simply too tired. It’s important to act on our intuition when we can lol
