The Fall of Civilization: Day 33 - 45 (Journal)

What would a group of survivors have to overcome if the end of the world arrived? In this collection of journal entries, I'm going to explore that idea and see how things turn out for them.

Day 33: The Issue

The last few days seemed to fly by. We buried Kert, it was sad to see him go and there were a lot of tears. It seemed fitting to use the tree that killed up as a grave marker and coffin. Maybe it's in poor taste, although, Jesus was crucified and the cross was made a symbol of remembrance for him so I suppose it's not too bad. The only thing we could do to get our minds off it was to carry on.

Our stockpiles of wood have grown significantly in recent days. I've been preparing them to use in construction alongside some others. I also made a friend called Darrel, he's been working with me. He goes on about constructing huts a lot and says that he used to watch a lot of videos on the subject. A time-lapse of someone building a camp for themselves out of nothing. "It was so satisfying to watch." That's what he said on the subject. I'm not sure what the videos were like, but I'll take his word for it.

Cayla is doing well. She's working with the farmers germinating some of our seeds, and has come out of her shell a bit. It's nice to see her making friends. While I wouldn't say she's "happy" she is better than she was during the trek to get here.

Berrett is being... Berrett. The niceness stopped yesterday, and he's arguing about leaving. Personally, I say good riddance at this stage.

Day 35: The Split

Well, the day came. Berrett made a big announcement about leaving, and alongside him, a few others went. He stared at me and all I could do was look away in awkwardness.

Of our original 34, we're down to 27. Kert passed away, and Berrett along with 5 others headed off. Rhyne didn't go... he's not really with us either though.

Rhyne is a strange one. All he does is spend his days chopping down trees, and when he's finished he has something to eat away from everyone else and goes to sleep. None of us are complaining about it, because he's like a machine... although, at this rate, we may not have many trees left.

Day 36: The Talk

Hexton called Rhyne aside and told him to cool it with the chopping. The issue was raised that we don't want to perimetre of wood to recede too far back.

In other news, I, along with Darrel completed a wood storage shed. We had to use dowels to hold the wood frame rather than nails. But, without some decent material, we're limited. It's nice that we have somewhere dry to store it all though. He had a great idea to use tree parks as tiles for our slanted roof.

Day 40: The Truck

He did it! Sam actually did it! We've got mobility now! Luckily we have enough petrol to cover a few miles, he's going to take it out for a spin to the nearest petrol station. Let's hope it isn't tapped out.

If we have enough petrol we'll be able to do some proper supply runs. I don't want to get my hopes up yet, but Hexton mentioned about gathering a list of what we need to fully sustain ourselves. One thing I'm thinking of is greenhouses of some kind, we'll have a much better variety of food if we had a bunch of them.

Day 41: The Supply Run

Sam and another from the camp headed off. Now we just need to wait for him to get back. For safety, Hexton gave him a handgun. Who knows what they'll encounter out there.

There are small villages and towns not far from us, so hopefully he'll be able to find what we need, so long as it hasn't been looted already.

General woodwork supplies, tools, nails, all that stuff really, Darrel suggested bin liners for waterproofing the structures we made. Farm supplies are a must, seeds, tools, greenhouses, fertilizer, and growth hormone. Weaponry, food, just about anything like that. Sam laughed and told us the truck isn't that big, at least he'll be able to mark some stuff off for later.

Day 42: The Return

The truck is in bits! Sam and Jack returned, luckily they had some supplies, but the vehicle has seen better days. They said they passed through the nearest village and there was hardly anything left for them to loot. The next town beyond did have supplies, but there was another group down there. Barricades made of scrap stopped them from entering with the truck, so they headed in on foot to scout it out.

They were caught, and in their escape, we were shot at. They made it away unscathed, but the truck was hit a few times. Whether the damage is cosmetic or not remains to be seen. At least they got some fuel, so another trip will be possible in the near future.

Day 45: The Plan

Hexton called a meeting today. "We're going to need some defenses erected." That's how he started it. The thought of aggressive people nearby doesn't fill us with a lot of confidence. As well as erecting some defenses, everyone needs to take up nightly patrols, and we need to think of an efficient way to alert everyone, screaming and shouting is okay but not the best method.

The Truck is okay as far as Sam can see, and they're planning on another journey, but this time they're going in the opposite direction. They got a map which is now in the living room of the farmhouse. Their location is marked, as is our own. It'll be good to mark off locations nearby that we can check out on foot.

This sort of remind me of a book I read called the Dog Stars. It has that desolate suspenseful feeling that comes with the end of the world. You may have little moments of joy here and there, but in the end, you're still stuck in the apocalypse. 😣
