This hunger for profit and rapid enrichment has grown in society, spreading like cancer, leading many to make decisions based solely on money and the status it brings.

This is evident in the labor field, where in my country I observe a marked abuse of public service. Many young people choose careers solely based on the guaranteed salary that comes with working for the state, and they occupy roles that require commitment, capability, and ethics—without possessing any of these qualities.

It would be naïve to think the same doesn’t happen in the private sector, as we also see people practicing professions without ethics or principles, many of them even in the health sector, with deadly consequences in many cases.

As a professional, I’ve seen firsthand this mentality of placing profit above principles, which led me to choose not to practice my profession because I couldn’t betray my personal and professional ethics.

If the world weren’t so consumerist and competitive in flaunting luxury and material possessions, perhaps people could return to choosing work they love without thinking about money.

Seeing the state of the world, I believe it will be difficult to return to a lifestyle that prioritizes personal fulfillment, vocations, principles, and values—unless an event occurs that awakens the dormant consciences of society.

C-8: Cuando se prioriza el lucro antes que la salud

La razón de ser de las empresas es el lucro, sin importar las consecuencias negativas directas y mucho menos las colaterales que pudieran ocasionar durante el proceso.

Empresas como DuPont, la creadora del teflón era consciente del daño a la salud que ocasionaba la elaboración de sus productos. Tenían información médica y científica sobre la toxicidad de sus productos, pero nunca suspendieron la producción de sus artículos ni los retiraron del mercado.

Esta mentalidad empresarial, es la que fomenta este tipo de acciones criminales muchas veces, impulsada por el afán de lucro y de crecimiento profesional sin importar los medios.

Este afán de lucro y de enriquecimiento rápido ha ido creciendo en la sociedad, extendiéndose como un cáncer, haciendo que muchas personas tomen decisiones basadas exclusivamente en el dinero y estatus que el mismo da.

Esto se puede notar en el campo laboral, en el que en mi país noto un marcado abuso de la función pública. Muchos jóvenes eligen carrera únicamente pensando en el salario seguro que otorga trabajar para el estado, y ocupan cargos en los que se requiere compromiso, capacidad y ética sin tenerlos.

Sería iluso pensar que lo mismo no ocurre en el sector privado, ya que también vemos personas ejerciendo profesiones sin ética y sin principios, muchas de ellas incluso en el sector de la salud, con consecuencias mortales en muchos casos.

Como profesional me ha tocado de lleno ver esta mentalidad de anteponer el lucro a los principios, lo que ha hecho que decidiera no ejercer mi profesión porque no podía romper mi ética personal y profesional.

Si el mundo no fuera tan consumista y competitivo en ostentar lujos y posesiones materiales, tal vez las personas podrían volver a elegir trabajar en lo que aman sin pensar en el dinero.

Viendo cómo está el mundo, creo que será difícil volver a un estilo de vida que priorice la satisfacción personal, las vocaciones, los principios y valores, sin que ocurra un evento que despierte las conciencias dormidas de la sociedad.
