Celebrating isn't about money

Of course, celebrating with unlimited money would ideally be the best, but there are things that can't be bought with all the money in the world. That's why, if we have a loving family that we can count on in good times and bad, it's much more valuable than having a lot of money if we lack that. I know this from personal experience, as there were years when I had all the money I needed to buy whatever I wanted to celebrate the holidays, but I didn't have the time to spend with my family. On those occasions, it didn't do me much good to have the budget if I ended up spending New Year's Eve alone.

Many will say that that's what friends are for, but I'm one of those people who believe that these dates are family occasions. And since friends also have families, it's logical that they're with them. That's why I always value family company more, and everything else is secondary.

Despite that, I consider myself very lucky because there was never a lack of food on the table, even if it was simple. That's something we should always value and be grateful for, since not everyone has that luck.

The years of prosperity passed, in which the budgets for Christmas parties were virtually unlimited, since we could choose what we really wanted. Unfortunately, we're in times of lean cows, literally, since inflation makes money worth less and less, and even having it, there is a shortage of top-quality cuts that go to export, leaving us locals with the worst quality.

It's a paradox, since there are more heads of cattle than people in this country, but business is business, and the Government celebrates the macroeconomic figures, forgetting the very different reality that we citizens live on a daily basis.

So this year, not for lack of money, but for lack of supply, the Christmas and New Year's Eve dinner will probably consist of grilled chicken accompanied by potato salad and, if we're lucky, a tray of chipa guazú.

Of the typical Paraguayan dishes, chipa guazú is the one I always recommend to anyone who asks me, and although it's not an original and unique dish - in fact, there have already been international controversies when the neighboring country wanted to baptize it as choclotorta and sell it as a local creation - it's certainly delicious.

To that would be added, depending on the available energy, an abundant clericó, which is a drink based on red wine, orange juice, and fruit salad, or a bottle of cider to set the mood.

As the family is reduced by time and distance, this year there will be only three of us at the table, but if we count the pets, we reach half a dozen!

Well, friend, again, let me remind you that the good thing about these festivities is being able to enjoy the company of our loved ones beyond what we can buy or not.

Celebrar no se trata de dinero

Claro que celebrar con dinero ilimitado siempre sería idealmente lo mejor, pero hay cosas que no se pueden comprar ni con todo el dinero del mundo.

Por eso, si tenemos una familia amorosa con la que se puede contar en las buenas y en las malas es mucho más valioso que tener mucho dinero si carecemos de ella.

Lo se por experiencia propia, ya que hubo años en los que tenía todo el dinero que necesitaba para comprar lo que quisiera para celebrar las fiestas, pero no tenía el tiempo para ir a pasar con mi familia.

En esas ocasiones, no me servía de mucho tener el presupuesto suficiente si terminaría pasando sola las fiestas de fin de año.

Muchos dirán que para eso están los amigos, pero soy de las personas que creen que estas fechas son ocasiones familiares. Y como los amigos también tienen familias, pues lo lógico es que estén con ellas.

Por eso siempre valoro más la compañía de la familia, y el resto ya es secundario.

A pesar de ello, puedo considerarme muy afortunada porque nunca faltó la comida en la mesa, aunque ésta fuera sencilla. Eso es algo que siempre debemos valorar y agradecer ya que no todos tienen esta suerte.

Pasaron los años de prosperidad en los que los presupuestos para las fiestas navideñas eran virtualmente ilimitados, ya que podíamos elegir lo que realmente deseábamos.

Lamentablemente estamos en épocas de vacas flacas, literalmente, ya que la inflación hace que el dinero valga cada vez menos, y aún teniéndolo, escasean los cortes de primera que van a exportación, quedando para nosotros los locales la peor calidad.

Toda una paradoja, ya que en este país hay más cabezas de ganado vacuno que de personas, pero negocios son negocios, y el Gobierno celebra las cifras macroeconómicas olvidando la realidad muy distinta que vivimos los ciudadanos de a pie.

Así que este año, y no por falta de dinero, sino por falta de oferta, la cena navideña y de año nuevo posiblemente estará compuesta de pollo asado a la parrilla acompañado de ensalada de papas y si hay suerte, una bandeja de chipa guazú.

De las comidas típicas de Paraguay, es el chipa guazú el que siempre recomiendo a cualquiera que me pregunte, y aunque no sea un plato original y único -de hecho ya existieron polémicas internacionales cuando en el vecino país quisieron bautizarla como choclotorta y venderla como una creación local- ciertamente es delicioso.

A eso se sumaría dependiendo de la energía disponible un abundante clericó que es una bebida en base a vino tinto, jugo de naranja y ensalada de frutas o una botella de sidra para ambientar el clima.

Como la familia se va reduciendo por el tiempo y la distancia, este año seremos solo tres a la mesa, pero si contamos a las mascotas llegamos a la media docena!

Pues bueno amigos, nuevamente recordarles que lo bueno de estas festividades es poder disfrutar de la compañía de nuestros seres queridos más allá de lo que podamos comprar o no.
