Seventy-two hours after the global blackout caused by the collapse of oil wells struck by an intercontinental missile launched by the country everyone knew as the United States, every battery-powered device had gone dead.

People had begun burning books, magazines, toys, and even furniture just to carry out their daily tasks.

When the canned goods from every store and supermarket — looted daily — finally ran out, small groups of humans began forming out of practical necessity rather than any sense of affinity, and slowly started leaving the cities.

The catch was that no one dared to move during the day, when there was natural light, because of the risk of being attacked — or something far worse. Rumors had already begun to spread about groups of cannibals hunting humans.

Every night, barely audible whispers could be heard: light the way, light the way — because each group was allowed only one torch, in an effort to pass unnoticed. Those who let their guard down paid a very steep price.

A las 72 horas del apagón mundial causado por el colapso de los pozos petrolíferos ocasionado por un misil intercontinental lanzado por el país que todos conocían como Estados Unitarios, ya todos los aparatos que funcionaban a batería se habían agotado, y las personas habían empezado a quemar los libros, revistas, juguetes y hasta muebles para poder realizar las tareas cotidianas.

Cuando finalmente se acabaron las provisiones de productos enlatados de todas las tiendas y supermercados que fueron saqueados diariamente, los pequeños grupos de humanos que se fueron formando por cuestiones prácticas más que por afinidad empezaron a dejar las ciudades.

El detalle era que nadie se atrevía a hacerlo de día, cuando había luz natural debido a que corrían el riesgo de ser asaltados o algo mucho peor. Ya corrían rumores sobre grupos de caníbales que cazaban humanos.

Cada noche se escuchaban susurros apenas audibles diciendo alumbra el camino, alumbra el camino, porque sólo se podía llevar una antorcha por grupo, para tratar de pasar desapercibidos, porque los que no estaban alertas terminaban pagándolo muy caro.
