I feel climate change in my feet 👣

It might sound silly to mention the feet, but this year the cold is unusually intense for a Paraguayan autumn, which used to be practically the same as summer in terms of average temperatures.

I’m someone who tends to have cold feet, so I feel the temperature more intensely in that area, and this year I had to buy wool socks—the kind grandmothers used to wear!

It’s true that the climate follows patterns, and from time to time there are extreme weather phenomena. With El Niño and La Niña, we’ve had several years swinging between unusual droughts and floods.

But now, alongside climate changes, there’s a kind of desert-like climate added in—with cold mornings and nights even during summer, something that never used to happen, as it was hot 24 hours a day.

Other changes I’ve noticed include nearly hurricane-like winds that we’re now experiencing—something we didn’t use to see before the rise of large-scale agriculture and cattle ranching.

Climate change is a reality, because the world is changing. What once were lush forests are now soybean fields or pastures for livestock.

The expansion of urban areas has also led to the disappearance of trees and ecosystems that once regulated the rain cycle.

Without ecological balance, we can’t expect climatic balance—leading to disastrous consequences for everyday people.

My country is characterized by neglect in matters of public infrastructure, and no measures are being taken to mitigate the effects of a changing climate.

In the cities of Greater Asunción—which include the capital and its surrounding cities—going out during rainy days has become a life-or-death risk due to the large torrents of water we colloquially call “Raudales.”

Sadly, there have been multiple deaths caused by the rain and the lack of infrastructure to handle stormwater. These tragedies could have been avoided if cities had planned their growth.

I remember the first very prominent case of water-related tragedy in public space. It involved a Brazilian couple who were traveling through Paraguay by motorbike.

The lack of alerts and signage led the travelers into an extremely dangerous area during the rainy season. At a stream crossing with no protective barriers, they were swept away by the water’s current.

Several other cases have occurred since, yet the government still has not taken measures proportionate to the seriousness of the issue. Deforestation is allowed without restraint. Construction is permitted in areas that common sense would deem hazardous—like the banks of rivers—and many other decisions border on criminal negligence.

But ultimately, society as a whole is responsible for not demanding more respect for the environment—because in the end, this is the only planet we have to live on. And if we don’t take care of it, nature’s fury will harshly remind us that every action has a reaction.

The climate change is indeed real, I have observed extreme conditions in my own environment but it seems it's even worse around you. I hope things are brought under control soon enough to limit loss of lives and property due to this changes.

I agree with you if we've alarms on changed weather or floods we can save many lives as in an alarming situation we can do many things to save us.

My mom's feet also feel climate change as it's not only to you that's why it's not weird to listen
