My Frustrated Vacation Plans / Mis frustradas vacaciones

Going on vacation is one of the most necessary activities for human beings, especially for those who work 350 days a year just to be able to rest for 15. Well, at least that's the standard in my country… We get 15 days off for each year of continuous work. In the best-case scenario, people work Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; others even work until noon on Saturdays. And in the worst-case scenario, they work all 365 days of the year.

This is my current reality since I became self-employed, running a small grocery store, which in my region is colloquially called a “Despensa.” Fortunately for me, I have parents who refuse to rest and help me immensely with the business.

Now that the extreme summer season has ended, my parents cover for me three days a week, so I’m free from Friday to Sunday and resume activities on Monday.

That works well for me because spending 12 hours a day waiting for sales is incredibly exhausting. Even worse, every time I go to the bathroom, it just so happens that a customer appears right at that moment. It’s as if they have an alarm that tells them the exact five minutes when I’m unavailable.

The same thing happens with lunch. No matter what time I sit down to eat, the moment I do, someone shows up—a customer or a supplier. Without a doubt, it should be added to Murphy’s Law.

The good thing about owning a business is having some flexibility with schedules. For example, I’m currently a member of the Electoral College of a nonprofit organization, and next Saturday, the General Assembly will take place, where elections will be held.

Since I live quite far from Asunción, where the meeting will be held, I need to travel the day before to arrive early the next day and return on Sunday. Without my parents' support, the business would be closed, which comes with the risk of leaving it unattended.

Life may sometimes seem simple, but everything has its complexity. If I wanted to take a vacation, I’d have to go alone, and then my parents would take theirs afterward. We have dogs, cats, and chickens that obviously need to be fed every day, so a family vacation is impossible. And a 15-day vacation would be selfish since it would burden my parents with more work—although they still feel young, they really aren’t anymore.

That’s why I scrapped my plan to travel to Spain this year to do the Camino de Santiago. On top of that, the friend who had offered me a place to stay backed out, which significantly increased the required budget.

It’s truly a shame because it was something I really wanted to do, but perhaps it’s best to discard the idea for the reasons mentioned above. I can’t enjoy myself knowing that I’m adding more work and responsibilities to my parents.

Oh well, such is life. In the meantime, I enjoy my little weekend getaways every week, which isn’t insignificant. You have to appreciate what you have. As the saying goes:

“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!”

Salir de vacaciones es una de las actividades más necesarias para el ser humano, en especial para aquellos que trabajan 350 días a la semana para poder descansar 15. Bueno al menos esa es la norma en mi país... Tener 15 días por cada año de trabajo continuado. En el mejor de los casos las personas trabajan de lunes a viernes de 7 a 18, otros incluso trabajan hasta el mediodía del sábado, y en el peor de los casos, se trabaja los 365 días del año.

Ahora, luego de que la temporada de verano y su clima extremo terminó, mis padres me relevan 3 días a la semana, así que estoy libre desde los viernes hasta los domingos, retomando actividades los lunes.

Eso está muy bien para mi, porque realmente estar 12 horas pendiente de tener alguna venta es terriblemente cansado, peor aún, que cada vez que voy al baño, resulta que es justo el momento en el que aparece un cliente. Pareciera que tienen una alarma que les avisa cuáles son los únicos 5 minutos en que no estoy disponible.

Lo mismo pasa con el almuerzo. Sin importar la hora en que lo haga, justo apenas me siento a la mesa, en ese momento viene alguien, cliente o proveedor. Sin dudas debería de agregarse a la Ley de Murphy.

Lo bueno de tener un propio negocio es que puedes tener cierta flexibilidad con tus horarios. Por ejemplo, actualmente soy miembro del Colegio Electoral de una entidad sin fines de lucro, y el próximo sábado se realizará la Asamblea General Ordinaria en la cuál habrá elecciones.

Como vivo bastante lejos de Asunción, lugar donde tiene lugar la reunión, debo viajar un día antes para poder estar presente temprano al día siguiente, y volver el domingo. Si no tuviera el apoyo de mis padres, el negocio estaría cerrado, y con el riesgo que implica dejarlo sólo.

Pues bien, la vida de una persona a veces puede parecer muy simple, pero todo tiene su complejidad. Si quisiera tomarme vacaciones, debería ser sola, y luego que mis padres se tomen ellos sus vacaciones, porque tenemos perros, gatos y gallinas, que obviamente necesitan comer cada día, así que unas vacaciones familiares son imposibles, y unas vacaciones de 15 días serían egoístas, ya que recargaría de trabajo a mis padres, que aunque se sienten jóvenes, ya no lo son.

Es por eso que descarté mi plan de ir de Vacaciones este año para hacer el Camino de Santiago, en España, a lo cual se sumó el hecho de que el amigo que me prestaría la casa en la que iba a quedarme se retractó, lo que eleva bastante el presupuesto necesario.

Es una verdadera pena, porque es algo que realmente deseaba hacer, pero posiblemente sea lo mejor descartarlo, por las razones mencionadas antes. No puedo divertirme yo, sabiendo que le doy más trabajo y obligaciones a mis padres.

En fin, son cosas de la vida, mientras tanto, disfruto de mis mini vacaciones de fin de semana, cada semana, lo cual no es poca cosa, hay que agradecer lo que se tiene, y como dicen:

¡Si la vida te da limones, has limonada!
