Prisons for Animals

One thing I will never agree with is the notion that zoos exist to conserve animals. If we truly want animals to have safe places to live, we should create more nature reserves and increase the penalties for poaching protected species.

No matter how large zoo facilities may be, they are still prisons—and simultaneously chambers of torture. The stress animals endure due to the constant flow of people is overwhelming, not to mention the visitors who become outright harassers, provoking and disturbing the animals.

If someone tells me zoos are spaces where children can learn, I’ll say yes—children do learn. But they learn that animals exist for their pleasure and entertainment, that captivity is justified and natural.

Do we really want children to grow up believing that continuous, constant suffering imposed on other species in the animal kingdom is acceptable?

If someone argues that zoos help ensure animals’ survival and that the visits raise money for their upkeep, I’ll say it’s a very selfish way of "helping." They could simply donate money without subjecting animals to the constant stress of being watched, talked at, and bombarded by noise that’s likely overwhelming for them.

I believe zoos should be abolished, and animals relocated to sanctuaries—where they may not have absolute freedom, but at least they’d enjoy greater peace and tranquility.

This also applies to safaris. I think we need to understand the fine line that separates human rights from animal rights. We should begin to respect them as fellow travelers on this journey.

We’re far too accustomed to seeing ourselves as rulers of the world, when in fact we've driven hundreds of animal and plant species to extinction in a relatively short amount of time.

If we don't begin to recognize the importance of preserving natural spaces where animals can live and reproduce freely, it's very likely that in the near future, the only animals remaining will be those we use for food—and even that’s uncertain, given the development and experimentation of so-called lab-grown meat.

Luckily, this reflection was limited to zoos—because if we were to discuss circuses and water parks, the conclusions would be even more disturbing. Honestly, I’m sometimes horrified by the extent of cruelty humanity is capable of when money and profit are involved.
