My post today was inspired by @mango-juice post on Shiraza who has the Weapons Training ability.

The Weapons Training ability allows units like Shiraza to grant its attack type and attack power to adjacent allied units that normally have no attack. The trained units can then attack using the same attack type: melee, ranged or magic. What's more, the effect remains even if the unit with Weapons Training is defeated.

A fun strategy is to employ two units with Weapons Training ability and place a none attack unit between them. The unit that has no attack will suddenly gain two attack types making it a dual attack unit while keeping whatever benefits he had for not having an attack. I'll show a sample battle where I used this strategy.

Featured Battle

The battle had the Outsider ruleset, allowing me to include Kulu Mastermind in my line up. The mana was capped at fifty seven which allowed me to use high mana units. The team I used was led by the Frontier archon who grants additional magic attack to her team. The rest of the units were as follows.

Blue Wyrm Travesty

Blue Wyrm Travesty is a thirteen mana beast. It deals a huge seven melee damage and has excellent defense for tank duties. It also slows down the enemy with its ability.

Kulu Mastermind

Kulu Mastermind is a legendary reward card from the Chaos Legion set. He deals four melee damage and has the Opportunity ability that allows him to attack with melee from any position. He also has the Weapons training ability.

Ulundin Overseer

Ulundin Overseer is a beefy tank but has no attack of his own. I positioned him in between two units with Weapons Training ability and he gained two attacks. He now deals three magic and three melee damage while having huge defense in his arsenal.

Shiraza

Shiraza is my favorite Conclave Arcana card. She has Weapons Training ability that brought huge value to my none attack cards. She is a neutral card that means I can use her with all splinters.

Torrent Sniper

Torrent Sniper is a decent damage dealer. However, because of the archon and his combo with Shock Trooper, his damage potential goes up the longer the battle goes on because of the "buff" he gets from Shock Trooper.

Shock Trooper

Shock Trooper is a four mana unit that deals five magic damage. In return, he has an Electrified debilitation that hurts the whole team each round. Units with Painforge like Torrent Sniper can increase their power when getting hit by an ally.

The enemy had the Death splinter with a level six archon. He had a good team that debuffed my team with Rust and Blind. It decreased the defense of my tank and increased the chances of evading my physical attacks. Thankfully, most of my attacks were magic based and not affected by Blind.

My team had a great synergy. Aside from the Weapons Training trio, the Blue Wyrm Travesty decreases the speed of my enemy while Shock Trooper increased the speed of my team with Swiftness. I also had Torrent Sniper whose Painforge works well with the Shock Trooper's Electrified.

It was a good battle. My superior damage and beefy tanks carried the fight. My team missed some physical attacks due to blindness but all magic attacks hit their target and eliminated the enemy.

Final Thoughts

This is why I like Splinterlands. The best collection doesn't always win, the best strategy does. Careful team building, understanding abilities and the ruleset and anticipating your opponent can allow a well built lineup to defeat stronger individual cards. I'm kinda proud of this win. It shows that planning and synergy can overcome superior card rarity and raw stats.
