Weapons Movie Review - Not as Scary But Hits the Mark Anyway

Hello movie fans! I watched Weapons on HBO last weekend. Aside from "Sinners", it's one of the hyped horror movie of 2025. I already saw Sinners earlier this year and I wasn't that happy with it's plot that changed genre from historical Black culture to a vampire movie. I found the first half a bit boring and the vampire half not as great as "From Dust til Dawn" which also changed genre mid movie. Anyway, back to Weapons.
Summary

The movie starts when kids (except one) from the same class all disappeared from their homes at 2:17 am. They all walked out of their house and did a Naruto run to the same location. The story is told from the various view points of different characters as the viewers try to figure out what happened to the kids. Slowly, we unravel that there is something supernatural afoot behind the children's disappearance similar to Pennywise (IT) but not as scary. Eventually, we find out that the one kid that didn't go missing is somehow involved and will play a crucial role in helping subdue the villain.
Cast

Weapons features three former MCU stars in the movie.
Julia Garner
She plays Justine, who was the teacher of the missing kids. Some parents blame and even suspect her for the disappearance.
Josh Brolin
One of the parents of the missing kids. He decided to investigate the disappearance on his own and was able to connect the proper dots. Eventually, he and teacher Justine team up to find the missing kids.
Benedict Wong
The school principal who pressured the suspect and unfortunately fell victim to her influence.
My Take on the Movie

There was a lot of hype to the movie before it came out and I immediately watched it when it got available on HBO. I was expecting a scary fare similar to the Conjuring series or Stephen King's IT. While I did not find it as scary I wasn't disappointed. The movie focused more on the mystery and not the scares. It's a bit of a slow burn as we try to find out what happened through the view points of different characters. Then slowly unravel the supernatural force behind it.
Even the villain was unintentionally funny and the way she got defeated reminded me of grandmaster Pycelle from GoT. What I like about it is it didn't lean much into gore like the movie "Smile". There were some bloody scenes but not too much compared to other horror movies. Also, I liked that the villain got beat in the end and didn't do the familiar trope of surviving for a sequel. I'd recommend to watch it on weekends where you have nothing better to do and just want to relax and see good win vs evil. I wouldn't recommend it for kids though as there were scenes that are not for their eyes.
