Amazing Historical Events That Occurred on March 7th

Amazing Historical Event:In 1530, English King Henry VIII's divorce request was denied by the Pope, setting the precedent for a long struggle between the crown and the Catholic Church.

The refusal of Henry VIII's request for divorce was of monumental importance to the history of England. It marked the start of a series of events which culminated in the English Reformation, a period in which Henry VIII broke from the Catholic Church and declared himself head of the Church of England. During this period, he established Protestantism as England's state religion and dissolved nearly 800 monasteries across the country. A major consequence was that religious power became increasingly secularized during this time, as Henry VIII made decisions on dogma such as allowing clergy marriage. This struggle between Church and State continued until 1834 when Parliament passed legislation allowing for freedom of worship and disestablishment of the Anglican Church.

Amazing Historical Event:In 1801, Massachusetts enacted the first state voter registration law, making it the first state to recognize the right of citizens to vote.

The Massachusetts voter registration law, passed in 1801, was revolutionary for its time. This law was the first of its kind in the United States to recognize citizens' right to vote and set a precedent that allowed states to establish similar laws in the future. It required all potential voters to register before election day, ensuring that only eligible citizens could cast their ballots. Additionally, it mandated that all registered voters appear at the polls on election day, becoming one of the first steps towards creating a reliable system for monitoring voter turnout. Furthermore, it provided for detailed record-keeping and tracking of votes for future reference, helping to ensure that election results were accurate and transparent. At the time, this groundbreaking legislation helped establish Massachusetts as a leader in voting rights and provided a model that other states soon followed.

Amazing Historical Event: In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell was granted a patent for the telephone in the US, marking the beginning of one of the most revolutionary inventions of the modern age.

Alexander Graham Bell was born in 1847 and grew up with an interest in all things scientific. He was a professor of elocution and even developed Visible Speech, a system to help deaf people learn to speak. During this time he began experimenting with sound transmission, working on designs that would eventually lead to the invention of the telephone. His experiments were initially met with skepticism, but on March 7th, 1876, Bell had completed the design for a telephone transmitter and receiver which worked via electrical signals. This work was granted a US patent a few days later, marking the beginning of one of humanity’s greatest inventions – the telephone. The first words ever spoken over Bell’s invention are reported to have been “Mr Watson – come here – I want to see you” – words that would soon be echoed around the world as millions of people embraced this revolutionary device.

Amazing Historical Event:In 1936, Adolf Hitler broke the Treaty of Versailles by sending troops into the Rhineland, signaling the start of World War II.

Adolf Hitler's move to break the Treaty of Versailles by sending troops into the Rhineland in 1936 was a major turning point in world history. The Treaty of Versailles had been signed after World War I and aimed to limit German military activities, including the deployment of troops on the Rhineland. Hitler's decision to disregard this provision set the stage for World War II, as it marked his first major act of aggression against another country. This act emboldened Hitler and other power-hungry leaders across Europe, which resulted in a wave of reactionary politics that ultimately contributed to the start of World War II.

Amazing Historical Event: In 1965, the infamous "Bloody Sunday" occurred in Selma, Alabama, when state troopers and 600 black protesters clashed in a violent confrontation.

On March 7, 1965, over 600 unarmed civil rights protesters gathered in Selma, Alabama for a peaceful march to Montgomery, the state capital. Led by Martin Luther King Jr., the march was intended to bring attention to the injustice of racial segregation and Jim Crow laws in the south which denied African Americans the right to vote. On their way to Montgomery, protesters were met with extreme brutality from armed state troopers under orders from Governor George Wallace. The officers were equipped with tear gas and clubs and violently attacked the protesters resulting in seventeen marchers being hospitalized with serious injuries. This event became known as “Bloody Sunday” and sparked major outcry across America which resulted in President Lyndon Johnson signing into law The Voting Rights Act of 1965 - which prohibited racial discrimination when it comes to voting.
