Good evening fellow Nigerians.

Coming here every Friday to discuss important issues has become a norm and I want to congratulate the initiator, @sam.hangout

Nigeria and the flood matter

First, I would like to say that flood is a natural disaster. Though, it can be managed and guided against. In the case of Nigeria, the agency that is responsible for weather monitoring and forecast had issued a warming prior to this disaster.

Our government, at different levels have tried their best to guide against this problem by public enlightenment. Over the months, especially in NTA and cable tv networks, advertorials have taken over the airwaves that people should ensure that all drainages be cleared so as to reduce the number of causalities that may arise as a result.

Who Is To Blame?

One problem in Nigeria is that we heap a lot of excuses of blame on the government.
This time, the fault should go to individuals.
Here in Lagos, people have not considered the enlightenment programme as a serious matter. During rainfall, they dispose their refuse inside the drainage which end up blocking free flow of rainwater.

We should not leave everything in the hands of the government. It is our civic obligation to ensure that we support the little the government had done and uphold communal cleanliness and hygiene.

On the side of the government. There is need to begin to value human life. The Nigerian Emergency Management Agency(NEMA) in conjunction with NIMET is suppose to know what was coming, in relation to the release of the dam water from Cameron. But everyone kept their peace and enjoyed the time until disaster struck.

The government and the populace have a blame to share in this problem.

My brother, you have said the truth. Nigerians are the cause of the current flood and we are still not ready to do the needful.
Very dirty set of humans.

It is painful that it has to come to this. A lot of Nigerians, do not care. But there is a change anyways. I think we have learned our lessons. We would just have to move from here.

You are both the people and government is at fault. government

But only measures you stated here that is done by the government is public enlightment, these is not enough. Shouldn't measures have been put in place before the advent of the disaster, and even concerning the refuse dumping, did government provide adequate equipments for people to dump their refuse. I am not excusing the people because some still dump refuse into water bodies not minding the consequences but if government has taken the right measures in the first place then these acts will be minimal.

But really the Nigeria government has failed us, and it is left for us to help ourselves

The question we should ask ourselves here is:

Did the government construct drainages?

Yes, they did.

How blocked the drainages?

The people did.

Are you sure the drainages were built everywhere?

Most of the drainages have been blocked due to the wrong usage.
Of course, many places don't have drainage, and some people have build houses along drainage passage.

Goat head kwa. E make sense sha. At least, I go take am do nkwobi.

Seriously speaking, the people did not play their roles well.
Our government isn't perfect, since the people knew that they would be at the receiving end, they ought to have acted their part well.
