Etienne DelaMorandierre 1767-1859

Étienne Augustin Rocbert de la Morandière (1767–1859) was born in Varennes, Quebec. He became a notable fur trader, clerk, and the pioneer founder of Killarney, Ontario (originally known as Shibaonaning).

Early Life and Career

Birth: Born May 2, 1767, in Varennes, Quebec, to parents Abel-Étienne Rocbert de la Morandière and Marie-Louise Charlotte Bailly.

Departure: Left his widowed mother at age 17 to work as a clerk and fur trader for the North West Company

Travels: Traveled and traded across Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Mississippi, living for periods in Kalamazoo and Mackinac Island.

War of 1812: Served actively under the British flag as an ensign during the conflict.

Founding of Killarney, Ontario Settlement: Moved to Shibaonaning (now Killarney, Ontario) on June 20, 1820, establishing a permanent trading post and clearing land.

Pioneer Life: Brought the area's first cattle in 1823, cultivated crops, and hosted the first Catholic mass in the region in his home in 1834.

Death: Passed away on May 1, 1859, at the age of 91 in Killarney, where he is remembered as the community's founding father.
