I try to avoid whales. I've seen several coins crash when the whales dump their initial air drop.
STEM is quite interesting right now. The price is low. Most of the whales have left. The STEM rich list shows that it is one of the most balanced coins at the moment.

Does it need to be Science and Tech related ? Engineering, Match etc etc

STEM is from the education world. Posts should be about science, technology, engineering or math. Good educators are attentive to what is being said in educational settings.
Traditionally the posts have been on point and has not had the spam problems of some communities.
There might be a whale who blocks or downvotes irrelevant posts. Some how they kept the spam to a minimum.
