Fake WalletConnect App Steals $70K From Google Play Users
There are different applications that we use for our crypto transactions and also we use violates in the mobile app. This is a common practice that most of us follow but what if I say that even these wallet applications can be risky if you don't check properly before installing them? A recent incident happened where one of the popular wallet apps resulted in a loss of seventy thousand U S dollars. You read it right and it has happened because the installed application was fake.
It is hard to figure out if any application is fake but is available on Play Store because ideally, we do not cheque that if an application is available on Play Store. We rely on the application because we assume the Play Store team must have checked it before adding the app but what if something is missed by them then we are at risk. It is always recommended to check out the application before installing and I think the right approach would be to go through the official website and download the application from there. It will route to the Play Store or Apple Store depending on what operating system you use.
The app fooled users by asking them to connect their wallets and approve permissions, which allowed the attackers to steal funds. Not everyone was affected — only those who connected a wallet or met the malware’s specific targeting criteria were affected.
The amount that is lost because of this is big and users who are affected by these must be feeling very bad because generally whatever we install from the Play Store is something that we hardly check. Now it is also important that no matter what application related to Crypto and finance we install on the phone we must go through it and ensure that it is not fake and the publisher is genuine on the App Store. You never know how these fake applications work and what data they take from our devices which can turn out to be even bigger losses so we are sharing is not caring instead we need to be more active and vigilant on this side.
Wallet Connect is a very popular application and a lot of people use it but I am surprised that how these users did not check that the available application is not authentic instead it is fake I am sure there must be something that could bring attention and can be a case operated flag but it just happened so we can take the nation as a learning and be careful with such instead of going forward.
