RE: Hive-Naija Weekend Engagement #44 - "FLOODING IN NIGERIA"

avatar

You are viewing a single comment's thread:

I've missed Hive engagement I have to admit and I have been away for too long which is beyond my control. I am glad I am seeing this now and on time and before busy schedule kicks in, let me just dive right into it.

I have to start up top and say that the government should be held liable for this flooding. It's not rocket science that we need good, proper and effective drainage system. This is not just about places but all across because there was a time I saw and read the news of flooding at Banana Island. As fanciful and expensive that area is, you would feel that side should have the best of everything but no. It should be a standard in every area so much that everyone can have their lives and properties safe.

Another thing I would like to raise is that, it is a collective responsibility. I don't know how people do it that they drop things in drainage. We need to understand that it's a collective responsibility and we shouldn't say it's not our business because whether we like it or not, it might end up affecting us or someone close to us. We need to keep our drainage free. There is a reason why sanitation is being enforced every last Saturday of the month but even the government has eased up on it and the citizens are not playing their parts either. If we don't do our part how then do we expect the government who are not interested in doing anything before to do theirs?

The best we can do it, do our part, hold the government responsible to do theirs and help those who have been affected with the help they need per time. We also need to create awareness on proper drainage because the truth is not everyone knows the repercussion of dumping things anywhere on the road.

Indeed, people need to come together to play their own parts. Though, government aren't doing what they supposed to do, but we shouldn't wait for them until we know what to do. We are deceiving ourselves if we do not come together to stop throwing things in the drainage.

It isn't everything government will do for us oo .
Nice contribution, KP 😊

Sure, it isn't and most importantly the healthy sanitation needs to start from within.

Let's take for example, if the repercussions or damages arises, isn't it the masses that gets to suffer for it?

If we want a positive progress in this country of ours we need to be united in one voice and be bonded with love.

Yeah indeed we need to work hand in hand to change the situation and then we can hold government responsible for it later on, change should begin from us and then the government

Spot on. The same way the government was alerted to this flood before time, same way the people were advised to evacuate before time. But our coconut head and constant blame game won't let us take responsibility

Well, it's not easy to evacuate but if only the people that got the info listened , it would have been the best decision ever. Our government should just learn on how to protect her people by doing the needful...why didn't they built the Dam in the first place? This is my major anger with our government and not as if I fail to understand that we need to play our part

0

I understand that our government is just a conglomerate of selfish and greedy oldies, but we have to find a way to bred a new and better generation by letting our people know that they have to take responsibility

It's still two ways anyhow we look at it. Yes the people were informed on time but was provisions made for their moving out? Because there will surely be some who don't have people anywhere except in the locality.

Exactly, that what I said earlier... evacuating sounds simple but definitely not easy for some people

0

If only we could just agree for once, even just to protect our lives... Everyone has a part to play in all these that we see everyday in Nigeria. The government has not been doing their part, and we as citizens are really not helping matters.

The government should have ran repairs and placed new infrastructure by now. However, it is not the government that gets the drainage system all clogged up; it is we, those that use them, that cause damages.

How about the health damages self.

Corruption and disunity has shredded all over.

My prayer is that God should hear our cry speedily and comfort the affected soul

Electricity is normally a big issue, but with this issue with this flood, it is absolutely zero now.

0

God bless you my brother, let us cause the change to happen within us and then we can make sure the government hears our cry ...

0

A wies man once said, "Be the change that you want to see." It all starts from within, us.

0
0
0.000
avatar

With this point you have killed everything, yeah change from within will reflect outside and then we can take the fight against our government

0
0
0.000
avatar
(Edited)

I think fighting against the government is where many of have it wrong. We need to work with the government, and not fight them. Fighting them will only make them fight back. And have seen how that turned out in 2020 and many other similar cases. There's a whole lot we can do one our end to begin the good change for this country.

0
0
0.000
avatar

Hmmm indeed brother, thank you for convincing me that we don't need to fight back, we can only work hand in hand with them to cause a mass change and that will be a win win situation for all indeed... Respect boss

0

Isn't that what we all need, a win-win situation? Although we have greedy people, but the majority of Nigerians are looking for peace and safety.

We indeed need a win win situation bro even with greed we have others who wants it

No doubt but I need proper clarification on this...are we the cause of this flooding or our government?🤔

0
0

We are all in this together. The government does not make repairs and place new infrastructures. We, on the other hand, do not maintain the things we are given; some of us.

The government abeg😂😂😂🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️

0

avatar

@olujay you are very right boss the so called government started from us, we can help ourselves by doing the right thing 💯 when we stop putting refuge inside the drainage, this damage goes along way in our life and I'm not sure the government is ready to listen to us atall

0
0
0.000
avatar

Your points are good and authentic but,
Parts playing aside, hmmm we are talking about the flood and looking from it's cause, the best little drainages will not give a positive impact as to collecting the large water body that was released into the country

I mean, majority of us saw the release of the water and if I'm not mistaking the Nigerian government should have put things in place Also (extra large water collectors)
I rarely do the blame game, but on this one I'll have to blame it on the Nigerian government... My view ✌️❤️

0
0
0.000
avatar

Hmmmm before we blame the government why not look inside, we the people, what do we do when there is heavy rainfall please answer me first

0
0
0.000
avatar

Well the amount of water released into Nigeria in that short period of time can amount to what the earth can pour down in a one month none stop rain if not more than

When it rains, people throw dirty into flowing water and when it has stopped raining some particles left behind will be afloat until sanitation day where all will be brought out again and the area will be cleared. But it is still in the government because they didn't provide good waste management system for her people and if they did the cost will be too high to pay for the jobless citizens they have left hanging

Well if we continue to relate the matter it will still entangle on the government, thank you 😊😊

0
0
0.000
avatar

Yeah it will bro, I am telling you we both are at fault here. Because they don't pay well does that make you pour refuse into drainages, the government are the foundational problem but are we suppose to pour dirt in the first place, vyi only see the ones that afloat what of the ones that sang down?

0
0
0.000
avatar

I get your point Foxy, we should not end up doing the wrong thing because we are given the opportunity to do so. We can always do the right thing even when the government refuses to.

0

Thank you let's all come to a stand and use our common sense, ignorance is not an excuse to do something bad na...

The thing is we did not put the right people in the leadership position so how can they do what they are supposed to do? We though some have chosen the wrong leaders and we have to take full responsibility for that. The greed of some have affected the whole country so we have to know that.

0
0
0.000
avatar

The thing is that our vote doesn't count, so if it doesn't count how can we correct this election issue?

0
0
0.000
avatar

That's the thing, we are just so selfish that it has become so. We the people are the ones that made it so from the beginning and now it is affecting us.

0
0
0.000
avatar

It's quite puzzling when just 1% of the country wants to make a change, but the other 99% aren't responding, therefore this topic needs a lot of explanation because I'm not sure what else to say.

0
0
0.000
avatar

That's the problem we are facing even till tomorrow, we can talk but doing what we say is a very big problem. It is well sha, let's just keep trying.

0
0
0.000
avatar

The people might not be guilty and so is the government, there are just some people that are not doing their work well but we just blame it on the government or on the people and that is why it's better we don't look for who caused it but the way forward.

0
0
0.000
avatar

I do agree with some of your views, the government as you have rightly said have failed to provide us with larger water collectors and a proper refuse disposal system but this does not excuse us. There is more than one way to dispose of refuse, and even some that do have this disposal unit refuse to use it because they find it easier to just dump refuse into the gutter, so sad really. The first time I witness a woman dump refuse into the drainage system I was shocked, I went somewhere with my mom and it started raining we had to take shelter around some houses, and then this woman just came out and dump all that huge refuse into the gutter, I had to ask my mom why she did it and her reply was, that is their own way of dumping refuse, they had no proper disposal system. I blame the government 80%, after all, what strong measures did they put in place to prevent such a disaster in the first place, even after knowing the disaster that was coming, what exactly did they do? It shouldn't be when there is a flood disaster before safety measures are put in place, they ought to have prepared for a rainy day in the dry season. I also blame the people 20% because really we contribute most to our predicament if the government fail us then we should rise up and save ourselves.

0

The thing is we are forgetting that among us not all of us are not doing well financially, there are some rich men and women among us who can do some things to help but no, they want the government to do everything for the people. God has given us these rich people for the sake of times like this but just few are trying to help, so tell me why won't I blame ourselves? I love taking responsibility for my actions no matter how hard it is.

It's not news that the government has failed us, so why are we still trying to depend fully on them for everything?

there are some rich men and women among us who can do some things to help but no, they want the government to do everything for the people.

So true, perhaps they feel their money is for them only and not for the mass or perhaps they are afraid for their lives, no security in this country. They might feel as though they are exposing themselves to criminals if they take any action. Nigeria's rich people case is something else, out there in Other countries the rich are always donating to charity towards one cause or the other, but we are just so different in Nigeria.

But even the not financially buoyant also have their own, we don't have to be rich before these contribute to our quota.

The government has failed us over and over again and is time we know they don't care what happens to us. But aren't they the people we ought to rely on, can people come together and gather enough money to build a bigger dam in all the 37 States, I think not, this is still why we rely on the government cause they have the resources to do this. I think our resentment towards our incompetent government keeps increasing daily whenever will see how other countries prioritise their citizens' life.

My heart goes out to all those that have lost their lives, homes, houses and business during the flood disaster, i. I can't even begin to imagine the trauma they must be going through. I think it would be good if there is a therapy centre to help flood victims deal with the trauma, to help them understand that starting over might be hard but it will surely get better, to make them know that there is still hope for them.

The rich men won't be scared of being killed or kidnapped if they want to really help. There is no willingness to do anything, we just want to start enjoying without paying the price and that was how we got ourselves into this mess.

We can do anything if we can only work together but divided we are going no where.

Nigeria don't have such things, only the rich get access to these things most often. We just have to fight our way through the trauma.

We are too divided in Nigeria, until there is unity nothing big can be done.

It is so sad really, I pray to God to give us the mechanism to overcome these traumatic experiences

That's right, the government has failed to provide good waste management services and that's why most people end up dropping waste anywhere they dim fit.

What about the rich men and women that are among us and have refused to do anything? Well, I'm just sad for them because God has said it before that it will be hard for the rich men to enter into the kingdom of heaven.

The rich people have a very vital role to also play in every society especially when the government has refused to do these things. But no, instead they choose to leave us here and go to another country with their families and act like they don't see what is happening here.

I think I get Stan's point now, as a governor, local government chairman and so on, they should have been able to identify that such a problem will come and try to put things in place so as to reduce the effect but no they did not instead they fled and live the poor to die, that's really not good 😏.

True, I mean isn't that why we voted for the in the first place yet they chose to ignore our safety because of their own pocket. Even they knew what was going to happen dem no do anything, they know it won't reach their side. Nigerians will always blame the government even in matters that are within their rights to correct.

The government has its role to play in this, and so do the people. No matter how much you blame the government, it won't change the fact that you should take responsibility for yourself

The government should do their roles by giving us good government and good roads then provide incinerator all over the states for refuse.

Now I understand you better, we are talking about things in general instead of focusing more on the flood situation. Truly the rulers in these communities should have been able to know about the situation and seek the help of the government but instead I think they ran away with their families 😢.

Selfish people the whole lots of them. But should they seek help, will the government really raise an helping hand? I have little faith in government now, even before seeking help, the government of that state ought to have done analysis to know which area will be affected most, then put measures in place.

That's human behaviour, when they have got the power to leave. The area , they don't care about others, that's very bad and a very selfish act

I think the government have to provide public incinerator then to all over the country and gives instruction that anybody found dumping refuse will be arrested ,I think will that things like doing of refuse will change .

With that, the main problem is still from the government 😒

I Dey vex jhor😂😂

Omo the Banana island news was pretty shocking... I fear that Lagos will soon experience massive flooding. I heard the seal level has risen to the land level. Any small rainfall like this, everywhere go burst. God abeg 🤲.

I really hope Nigerians will take sanitation seriously and practice proper refuse dumping. The same goes to the government, I hope they take fast actions to mitigate this disaster before the flood swallows everyone alive. But of course, my God will not allow that to happen.

It's serious o, a friend of mine that passed along top mainland bridge two days ago was complaining if how the water has rises almost touching the bridge itself , you could literally see the shock written all over her face when she recounted her trip experience over the bridge.

You self reason am banana island of all places, that the people there are near and always making there environment clean. Do you think dumping of refuse on moving water cause flooding at that place?

0

avatar

Lol me I no know if dem dey dump their refuse properly but one thing I know is that, bad disposal of refuse isn't actually the main cause. The major problem is heavy rainfall and movements of water from dams. Excess water keeps moving in and it's barely draining out.

Truth be told the government are supposed to ensure that lives and properties of it's citizens are secured. But we all are aware how wickedness, greediness and selfishness has encroached into our government today. This so disheartening, I am sure that someone somewhere in the government is happy over that disaster that struck those affected area.

For long I have shifted my hope from the government. Those people there are humans, some with wicked motives. The earlier we forget about them and turn to God for help the better. I am saying this with bitterness in heart, seeing how lives and properties were wasted. If we have responsible government , things like this should not be happening. what has happened has happened already but it should serve as a lesson to us all. We shouldn't wait for the government before we do what is right. There are many little things we over look and push the responsibility to the government that has affected us a lot. Whatever is within our power to do, let us do it and forget this government of a thing. If we live in riverine areas we should not wait for anyone to coerced us to keep the drainages clean. If it is something very expensive , we can do community contribution to have that met. That issue of banana island, if that area gets flooded I won't blame the government but the people living there. With all the money they have, they still want the government check the environment for them?

If we have a good government fine, the case is different but we know how our country is. This time around it is flood we don't know what might happen next, and where. Don't feel as if this affected a far place and it wouldn't come to you. Let us be vigilant and be good citizens, I am not in anyway supporting the government, all I am trying to say is that, it is high time we arise and secure ourselves. The government is weak and we all know it, they can't take care of us anymore.

To all those that are injured and lost their prosperities may the lord strengthen them and open doors for them to . May the souls of those that passed away rest in peace. Let's never give up, when there is life, there is always hope.

Hmmm well done my man I agree with you perfectly,we need to be the government of ourselves in this hard times but the question is can we do it without unity....

The government system is rotten and they have nothing to offer us anymore but are we sure we can find solutions to all the things without Their help....

And how can we achieve the best solution if we don't have a single voice

Awwn, it's so good to have you join us this weekend boo, it's been awhile really, hope you are doing well?

Truly we all have played a part one way or another and we are now bearing the consequences of our actions. No wonder the Bible says we shall reap whatever we sow. We have in one way or another contributed to this problem and all have to come together to fix it.

The government should be the one to mobilize the people to enlighten them of the dangers of doing some things and the people are to try to listen to them. Without the people there will be no leader but without leaders there will always be people.
