Coca Cola began as a medicinal tonic, most Gen Zs may not know this

Are you a fan of Coca Cola? 9 out of 10 times I would pick that over any drink. I'm not a fan of beer and I haven't drunk all beverages in the world so I can't say for sure that it's the best drink because there are some drink territories I'm yet to cross.

But the Coca Cola most of us love and which also contributed greatly to the success of the investor, Warren Buffett who happens to be own a huge stake of the company had quite an interesting history you may not have heard of.

This is something most Gen Zs probably don't know since Coca Cola was not invented recently.

  • Did you know that, Coca Cola began as a medicinal tonic and not a beverage?

This product went from a small medicinal tonic to worldwide cult favorite. It all started in 1886 when the Atlanta based pharmacist Dr. John Stith Pemberton released the tonic as a means to cure ailments. In its early days, it was a patent medicine touted as a cure for everything from nausea to nervousness. But while the tonic served its initial purpose, it was the beverage's sweet, refreshing taste that won the hearts of men and women with money in their pockets to buy it.

So what began as a simple mixing of ingredients eventually became popularized through soda fountains, which helped Coca Cola differentiate itself, standing out as an alternative to the typical medicinal tonic. But at the same time, Coca Cola was not consumed by the people then for its health benefits, but purely out of enjoyment. When it began to be manufactured and commercially sold in larger quantities, it became clear to the manufacturers that taste and consumer demand were greater than original intentions.

As the decades went on, Coca Cola changed with the times. As marketing campaigns, packaging and brand recognition set in, Coca Cola became more than just a drink, it became a valuable enterprise. Today, Coca Cola is one of the most recognizable products on the planet and an icon of branding value within the most respected enterprises in history.

And a lot of beverage companies try to create something similar to Coca Cola but the original will always remain original unless of course someone comes along with a bright idea.
