Elmina Castle of Cape Coast, history is painful but we still keep it for this reason

I had the chance to visit the historic Elmina Castle of Cape Coast in Ghana a long while back. However, I didn't leave the place smiling at all. Besides that, I went to Fort William and was so surprised with what I found out and the things I learned. This was a few years back. There is a small slave castle that not many people know about but the stories there were the saddest of all.
I sometimes think of why we still have these old places that tell stories of our pain. I wish we could remove them to get rid of the memory of what happened but when I am there, I realize why they haven't been removed yet.
It is almost like I can feel what my ancestors endured. I mostly overexaggerate so don't take me too seriously but I do feel overwhelmed by anger, sadness and pain.
But later on, I start to experience another emotion, a feeling of pride and gratitude that I can come back to that place if I want to. There was no such thing for my ancestors.
It's a place to remember them so that's the main point of keeping it in as much as the history is not so nice.
I won't forget you dear ancestors
We are still here and we are still fighting for a better country, we didn't break or give up and the spirit of the ancestors ate still in us.
For those that don't believe in spirits just role with whatever you think 😁
But we didn't finish our story there so maybe these places are not only about suffering, it could be that they help us in remembering our origins and the reasons why we have to keep going forward. There is no doubt that it hurts visiting them, but at the same time I am given strength. When I leave, I am still determined to keep fighting for a better future. It's a great place to gain confidence if only your perception about the past is right.
