Highway Heroes Lifted Crashed Helicopter to Save Trapped Crew
A woman nearly lost her life but thanks to the support of some people, she was saved. A red medical helicopter crashed on Highway 50 near Sacramento, California. The crash happened around 7:00 p.m. on a Monday evening. That helicopter belonged to REACH Air Medical Services and was carrying three of the company's crew members.
The helicopter began to fall toward the busy 8 lane highway which was filled with cars, many of the drivers saw the helicopter coming down and had to stop their vehicles.
When the helicopter hit the ground, it flipped onto its side. Thankfully, there was no fire and it was because the Airbus helicopter had a special fuel tank that is designed to stop flames after a crash.
However, the crew members inside were badly hurt and also trapped under the wreck. At the spare of the moment, a lot of the travelers on the highway rushed to help.
They struggled though, but they were able to work together to lift one side of the really heavy helicopter. About 15 people pushed as hard as they could to be able to move it. With that teamwork they were able to pull one victim out safely.
A man named Kenneth De Crescenzo was one of the helpers and according to the news, his wife filmed the rescue.
This is a YouTube video showing footage of the helicopter crashing to the ground and how the rescuers helped.
The three people rescued were the pilot of the helicopter, a nurse and a paramedic. All three of the victims were in critical conditions but at least they survived thanks to how fast help arrived.
The nurse, named Susan Smith, was the one trapped under the helicopter. Her family was more than grateful and they thanked both first responders and the everyday citizen heroes who rescued her.
A good news is that the paramedic, named Margaret ‘DeDe’ David, is now recovering quite well as said by local news. What would have been a tragic news of the week turned into good news of heroic efforts.
