Killmonger’s Last Words

What was for last night's movie night? Black Panther. I miss Chadwick and may his soul rest in perfect peace but during the ending where ironically it was Kill Monger that was dying in the movie, Kill Monger made a statement and I did some reflecting over that statement.

His line was this,

Bury me in the ocean with my ancestors who jumped from ships, cause they knew death was better than bondage

Black panther could have saved him but Kill Monger knew he was going to be a war prisoner for life in Wakanda. It's just a movie but people especially in history have had to make choices like these ones and they chose death over bondage. I'm not exactly talking about slavery, I'm talking about instances were have to decide, be controlled or end it all and it's really a matter of perspective.

I don't have the guts to pick death I'll admit but death is better than some situations and struggles some people face.

Kill Monger might seem as a villain in that story but I didn't see him as a villain in those last moments. I saw a man who has been hurt and shaped by a lifetime of loss and injustice. I'm not justifying all his actions, he killed so many people and made tattoo for each kill, it doesn't get any worse than this for a maniac but he had his reasons.

His anger and pain came from feeling trapped by the world and denied of the power to fight back. He saw vibranium and knew it could get him the power to seek revenge, against the entire world. That was a wrong direction but anyways it was his only resort according to him.

He was the bad guy but his last words were not. Freedom is something worth fighting for and sometimes dying for. Many soldiers have died fighting for the freedom of their nations. They chose death over slavery.

Being free is more important than living in chains and the chains could be physical chains like what was to happen to Kill Monger or mental and emotional ones that a lot of people face.

Some toxic relationships you're in must end, it's better to grieve over losing that person you're in love with than staying in the relationship that keeps you as a prisoner and causes you pain.

There are some limitations and restrictions that are necessary for order but some are just not and we accept them without questioning them. Sometimes, I let fear, comfort or the expectations of others hold me back.

We should be willing to stand for the better option and it comes with a level of courage many don't have but it doesn't mean we can't attain them. We must learn to value our own freedom and dignity.
