Right way to arrange food in your refrigerator

Until I realize something has spoiled prematurely, I tend not to even consider or maintain the zones of my refrigerator.

The fact is if you care enough about keeping your food fresh longer, you could use these proven guidelines for placing food in your fridge.

Your leftovers or drinks belong on the upper shelves of a fridge because those shelves have the most consistent temperature. You'll see them, you'll know they're there, and you'll remember to eat them before they spoil. The lower shelves of a refrigerator are colder than upper shelves because cold air is heavier than warm air, which is also the reason why raw meat should be stored in the lower shelves, this isn't for organization purposes, it's for the fact that raw meat spoils more quickly when it is at a warmer temperature than when it is colder.

The bottom drawer of a fridge, which has a high humidity setting is designed to store things like leaves and other vegetables that wilt quickly. The top drawer of a fridge, which has a low humidity setting is designed to store fruits and vegetables that will spoil if they are stored in a high humidity environment. If you store your carrots in the bottom drawer of your fridge, they will dehydrate and shrivel up, and your spinach will rot and turn to mush by Wednesday if say you placed them in on Sunday.

The refrigerator door has the highest temperature inside the refrigerator. Most people put eggs and milk inside the refrigerator door, but both of these items should actually be placed inside the main body of the refrigerator because they will tolerate fluctuations in temperature better than ketchup, mustard and other condiments.

It won't be a complete catastrophe if you don't follow these guidelines, but it won't be completely random either.

I think that most people don't make the effort to follow the proper guidelines for food storage because they feel like they would be creating a lot more work for themselves for little to no benefit. But on the contrary, the benefits of following the proper guidelines for food storage will compound significantly when you take into consideration that you are not throwing out food multiple days or weeks.
