Strange tentacle rabbits spotted in Fort Collins, Colorado

Recently, I came across a news article that was posted in August and apparently this strange thing has been around for a while. It showed rabbits from Fort Collins that appeared to have tentacles growing from their body mostly from the face as you can see from the screenshots taken and shared below.
It's so strange to see something like this because my first reaction was that it must be a trick or a hoax or somebody using AI to create something awkward and go viral but it couldn't have been because it was from reputable global news outlets.
The scientists after their observations believe this condition arises from a type of illness or virus that usually causes small bumps to form on a rabbit's body. But, it is interesting and somewhat creepy to me since I have never seen rabbits in such a distorted form, literally looking like zombies to me.
When I was growing up, I lived near many fields and saw plenty of rabbits, and they looked normal. They were simply hopping around and eating grass, so I'm wondering if all of the new viruses, some natural and some made intentionally in the lab are what is causing the rabbits to develop these unusual sickness. Perhaps it's the new environment, maybe because they are not used to all of the new types of buildings that have been built in the area. As human beings we're always making modifications and changes without realizing it. However, I believe that this also gives us a sense of excitement to see or discover something that is so different than what we have lived with for so long, excitement for us not so much for the rabbits though, because God knows I wouldn't want to look like that.
Most people living in that area are saying that it is best not to touch the rabbits because we could become infected, I agree. If you don't understand it, it's best not to touch and leave it to experts to examine. I don't want to get sick like that. However, there is a part of me that wants to see them and find out what the virus has done to the rabbits to change them into something that resembles an alien. I feel both remorse for the rabbits for being infected and a sense of curiosity to understand how the virus changed the way the rabbits look. If I was doing the research, my first guess would have been it's a type of cancer.
Scientists are currently studying them, and I hope that the study of our new discoveries will help us learn about not only these rabbits but some of the other types of animals that have viruses, as well.
Funny thing is, the rabbit has no idea that it looks the way that it does, it just continues living its life without knowing that it is different from normal. I really want to see this for myself as well.
