This YouTube video from 6abcActionNews shot a while ago shows just how hot Las Vegas can get in some seasons. As hot as 120 degrees. Enough heat to fry eggs out in the open.

Air conditions in such an area is an absolute necessity.

Thankfully, a North Las Vegas program is bringing some relief to the residents who endure the city's summer heat. The City of North Las Vegas and nonprofit group Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada now install nonfunctioning air conditioners and heaters at no charge for the neediest. A $1.25 million Healthy Homes Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing plus Urban Development is what would be used to pay for the work.

It is a project for low income home owners who are disabled or elderly or veterans. They are mostly on a fixed income and do not have savings to spend on expensive air conditioner repair or replacement. There is of course eligibility and that's based on a resident being at or below 80 percent of the area median income, the assistance is given to the neediest households. The qualified home owner can receive up to $10,000 in order to replace or repair the air conditioning system.

Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada CEO Bob Cleveland illustrated just how life in the desert without a working air conditioner is dangerous and can even be fatal. He said that families with an income level of less than $21,000 per year generally have to decide between food, medicine or a roof over their heads safely. He also added that these programs are set up to protect health and stabilize Las Vegas communities.

Leslie Nix, Grants or Administration Director for the city of North Las Vegas, said that a functioning air conditioner in Southern Nevada is not a luxury, it's a necessity. The heat levels could lead to dangerous outcomes for people living there, heat stroke is one that you should look out for.

The program keeps families breathing during life threatening heat waves, it reduces electricity bills every month and it also builds a healthier community in the long run. By placing new, efficient units, the city cools the homes and saves energy simultaneously.
