Why the Lion isn’t really the King of the Jungle

Funny enough, we call the lion the king of the jungle for some odd reason but they don’t really even live in the jungle. Most of the times if you see the lions, they would rather be out on the plains or savannah instead of the dense forest. If anything, the tigers are the ones who live in the jungle and I think they should be called kings there. They are top predators of the jungle.

But I can see why people believe this though, because lions have such big floofy manes they look like royalty. If you were to see a lion laying on a rock basking in the warm sun with it’s big flowy mane, you would totally understand how that thought came in to people's minds thousands of years ago.

Look at the size of this lion and the mane it has.

One other thing that makes the lion different than most cats is that they live in groups called prides. Most cats would prefer to be alone. The males keep the pride’s territory safe and the females do the majority of the hunting. I think the males also do some hunting but whatever the case may be there is a structure to the pride that has many dominant males.

When a lion roars you can hear that roar up to 8 km away. And in case you didn’t know, a lion roars for a reason, it’s their way of letting other lions know this is my land.

So, the king of the jungle thing has nothing to do with where the lion lives and everything to do with the lion’s presence and their power. They walk around like they own everything and in the savannah, they kind of do.

This is a video that explains it much better with good visuals too.
