The Role of Memes and GIFs in Modern Online Culture

As an old man I have mixed feelings about memes and GIFs. I was born in the era of no internet. In Bangladesh internet officially became available in 1996. But at that time only a few people knew what internet was, the amount of users was very less. At that time people used to talk to each other face to face, spent time together more, read story books in their free time, or they would go outside for outdoor activities. For that reason, I feel people were more connected to each other but nowadays they spend too much time scrolling through social media.

However, I am unable to deny the fact that memes and GIFs have become a huge part of the internet. Everyone is using it in their daily conversations so, it's everywhere. When you scroll your feed and find any post, after clicking the comment section you will see people commenting different kind of GIFs which are relatable to the post and funny.

Eventually, you will come across them even if you don't use those tools personally. It's a common practice now, people spend their time to find the correct GIF to comment under a post and other people like me who likes to read comments, they enjoy it the most and likes the comment of the relatable or funny ones.

One experience that changed my opinion happened during a difficult period in my life. A few years ago, I was dealing with a lot of pressure from work and financial responsibilities. One evening, while taking a break online, I came across a series of memes about middle-aged people struggling with rising bills, family responsibilities, and getting older. Normally, these are serious topics, but the memes presented them in a humorous way.

For the first time, I realized why people enjoy memes so much. They allow us to laugh at situations that are often stressful. Seeing thousands of people joking about the same challenges made me feel less alone. It reminded me that many others were going through similar experiences.

If there were no memes or GIFs, I think the internet would still function perfectly well. People would continue sharing information, learning new things, and communicating with each other. However, it would probably feel less creative and less reflective of everyday life. Memes have become a modern form of storytelling. They capture opinions, emotions, and cultural moments in a way that is quick and easy to understand.

I also think memes can be educational. I have learned about historical events, technology trends, and even financial topics through memes that sparked my curiosity and encouraged me to learn more.

That said, memes are not always positive. Some spread misinformation or encourage negative behavior. Like any form of media, they should be viewed critically.

Overall, I believe memes and GIFs have earned their place on the internet. They are more than just entertainment. They reflect how people think, feel, and react to the world around them. While I did not grow up with them, I now see them as an important part of modern online culture.
