A DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP

Giving the history of my country from the colonial era to independence, with British rule, independence, and the first Republic, to the beginning of military rule, encompassing the coup of 1966, which started it, followed by the civil war of 1967. Then, another military rule occurred before transitioning to the presidential system of government in 1979, which was later overthrown by another military coup in 1983, but ended in 1999, leading to the democratic government we are practising to date.

From the time of the democracy era, we have had so many remarkable presidents, the likes of President Olusegun Obasanjo Aremu, who was the first elected president after the military handed over power to civilian rule. He was president for eight years, serving for two tenures. He handed over to his successor, President Musa Yar'adua, whose tenure was short-lived as a result of his death was the president of the Republic of Nigeria from 2007 to 2010, giving President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, who was his vice, the remaining time in his tenure ship to be sown in and rule the country with the remaining time. President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was later elected and served as the president of the country for another four-year tenure before he lost the elections of 2015. Following was President Muhammad Buhari, who came to power in the year 2015, serving two tenures, with Bola Tinubu Ahmed as the present president.

The government of Umaru Musa Yar’adua, despite being short-lived, has always been admired as the most favourable government the country will ever live to remember. The government of Umaru Musa Yaradua from the time of his inauguration, was a government that came to power to purely serve its people. At the beginning of his tenure, he introduced several policies, like the seven-point agenda. He was interested in fighting corruption and allowing the rule of law to take effect rather than influencing it with the presidential powers he had.

President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua had the ordinary Nigerian in mind, and in his short-lived tenure, he had a lot of achievements, reducing the cost of fuel from seventy-five naira to sixty-five naira during his tenure, increasing salaries of the military and parliamentary personnels creating an economic relief felt by every citizen living in the country. He became the first president to declare his assets.

Aside from President Musa Yaradua’s government, another government that will stand out for many is the government of President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is well known for the debt relief he brought to the country, which was in billions of dollars, and the introduction of the advancement of telecommunication, GSM. It was during his tenure that companies like MTN, Globacom, etc., he was also known for the establishment of the anti-corruption agency, which is to say that he was also against corruption.

The government has been infiltrated by corrupt individuals who have made sure that their interest is only in themselves; as such, they do only things that benefit them and their generations to come directly, and leave to suffer, the things that will benefit the many. Nigeria was known as a country with the upper class, the middle class, and the lower class, but the need of some people in the state to be far above the rest has increased the income gap in the country, causing a shift in the middle class, leaving the country to have only the upper and the lower class. One thing that made President Musa Yar’adua stand out for me is his humility; he was not a man who was consumed with his status. He was a down-to-earth man, and all he wanted was a better, united country.

Yar'adua really did well, I can attest to that.
Just so unfortunate that he had to pass away while still in power.

Thanks for sharing.

President Musa Yar’adua was one of the few head of state that manage to reduce the cost of petroleum during his tenure which was a remarkable achievement compared to other head of state that were elected after him. His term was short lived but he is a president many still live o remember.
