Islami Bank ATM Disaster and My Field Technical Experience.

We realize how important banking services, especially ATM services, are in our daily lives when the entire system suddenly goes down. Today, I faced such an unprecedented and extremely challenging technical problem, which will be a great experience in field engineering life.

Suddenly, the system of about 1000 ATM booths of Islami Bank across the country froze simultaneously. Only coding and technical error messages were displayed on the screen. When customers were suffering and making noise all around, I got an urgent call to activate the machine of an important booth.

Upon reaching the spot, I realized that the problem was quite complex by looking at the condition of the machine screen. This was not a simple local hardware crash. As a first step, I turned off the main power of the machine and disconnected the LAN cable so that the network loop or central could not hit any command repeatedly. Then when I tried to access the admin panel of the machine, a new problem arose. The machine was not stabilizing at all and was repeatedly auto-restarting.

Due to repeated restarts, it became impossible to give commands at the OS level. With great patience, I tried my best for about 30 minutes, matching each step perfectly with the reboot timing. Finally, I was able to access the admin panel successfully. I went there and completed the necessary system configuration recovery and backend urgent tasks step by step.

Later, I found out that the problem originally started from the central head office. While making a major update or configuration change to the server or system, the backend team of the head office messed up the entire data communication. The chain reaction of which created this system freeze condition in all the machines across the country.

After completing all the work, when I reconnected the LAN cable and fully activated the machine and put it live, it was as if a big stone had been lifted from my chest. Then I punched the ATM card myself and checked the live transaction. When the money came out of the machine successfully, the long mental and physical fatigue disappeared in an instant. There can be no greater satisfaction for a technician than this.
