An 1880 Morgan Silver Beauty!

avatar

A few days back @cve3 shared an 1888 Morgan silver dollar and I realized it's been awhile since I shared any of mine. I hope you aren't all sick of them yet, but they are just so pretty! This one is a beautiful 1880 Morgan with some nice toning and very light bag marks. These are one of my absolute favorite coins to collect. Because so few ever really got circulated there is a nice population of mint state coins. And for @trumpman just look at that sexy eagle!

I went over the history of the Morgan dollar in a post a few weeks back in my post The Beautiful Morgan Dollar if you're interested. George T. Morgan designed this iconic coin and it was minted from 1878 until 1904 and again in 1921 using 90% silver and 10% copper. The US Mint has also been producing a new version of the coin in 99.99% pure silver since 2021.

About this particular coin:
Design: George T. Morgan
Year: 1880
Mint: Philadelphia
Diameter: 38.1 mm
Weight: 26.73 grams
Composition: 90% silver and 10% copper
Edge: Reeded
Population: 12,600,000

This coin I got through a private sale not too long ago. If you are questioning the 0 in the date, sadly in not a zero over a nine, believe me I looked closely! I'm considering getting it graded, the only thing really worrying me is the bag mark on the jawline and neck. It's a lot like rolling the dice on how they are going to come back! Every step down from MS 65 is a huge drop in value.

Most of the shops I frequent know that I will always pick up any they find and they save them for me! They are a relatively affordable coins for the most part but very beautiful additions to any stack. If you have any questions or comments feel free to add them below.

Have a great day!

And my disclaimer: Gold and silver stacking can be a fun hobby but isn't for everyone. You can lose money. I'm not a financial advisor and this isn't financial advice, please always do your own research before spending your hard earned money.

Nice shape I’d say it’s an MS62 or 63

Bag marks take it down from higher grades unfortunately. The 65 version is worth a nice chunk of cash!

Oh, you have a 1880 Morgan! Do you know that I am partial to numbers 8, or 88, or 888? So... this is mine:

I always love looking at Morgans. I wish they would design coins like that in the U.S. again.

(Edited)

I recently bought my 2021 S Morgan Silver Dollar at the Las Vegas Coin Show... I paid 125 Fiat USD's for it... In my book, that comes to $1.25 on the "other side" of the U.S. Monetary Correction...

This came out from my Father's estate, he collected coins from down in Seattle I believe. He passed on and I got his collection, mostly Canadian. I have another six Morgans with it and nine Peace Dollars as well in varying grades.
