From Kings to Keyboards: Why Free Speech Still Isn’t Safe

I often wonder why people still say freedom of speech still exists, some will claim they have the right to speak or air their opinions yet some will reply back with your opinions doesn't matters especially those in power since they are actually above the law (indirect). In the past, when we have kings and queen, they are the highest in rank and mostly above the law, like I have seen in Yoruba movies, once they make a decision, no one can change it, it was like they are the law, people fear most of them, if they say anything that didn't sit well, they either get jailed or skilled. Literally, the same is happening currently even though we now have social media, the fastest way to express our opinions but still not safe.

This fear of criticism has run deeper than we think especially into institutions, jobs among others, someone once said, you have to be careful of what you post online, you might think you are saying the right thing and it won't sit well with some people. There is this ongoing case about a Nysc lady who call out the president on social media about the ongoing high price of goods and how the country is worsening day by day and she was attacked by the nysc board which seem as an eye service to me, since we are in democratic era, the government is there to serve its people and it is our right to voice opinions if he is doing a good job or not but no, they don't want that, they want everyone to be silent and allow them do whatever they like. After this particular girl spoke up, those in office were on her neck and now I heard they extended her 1 year service with extra 2month without pay and I'm sure that even after the whole service, applying for government job will be every difficult for her.

Thank God for digital skills, we can now survive without depending on any government jobs or working in a private institution where you will be scared to voice our your opinions if they treat you bad or you will be scared that if they fired you, that will be the end. Since there is no good job out there, people have to take in every wrong doings just to be able to keep their job and have food on their table. Another person they are against is Very Dark Man (VDM) who is calling out those in power with everything he has, he is the voice of the voiceless and because he has the backing of people, they can't really do anything to him for now, if not, they would have silence him just like they did to some people (freedom fighters). It is just funny that during the reign of Goodluck Jonathan, this current government were the one protesting against him, calling him a bad leader that the people are suffering but now that it is their turn, they hate criticism

Freedom of speech is no longer free. These days, saying what’s on your mind is seen as either being judgmental or unacceptable. Everyone is now getting use to not speaking up and just watching things as they unfold. Thanks to the digital space, everything is becoming more bearable.
