RE: When People Call Me Latin@ or Latinx

You are viewing a single comment's thread:

I find it pathetic when progressives lump huge portions of world population into the category "Latino." Latino refers to people who speak a Latin based language ... Spanish or Portuguese. The name ignores the Native American heritage of the people living in lands colonized by Spain and Portugal.

If I was Latino, I would counter efforts by progressives to lump me into the Latino category by trying to discover my real heritage.

Yeah, there are multiple perspectives on the word Latino.
The original word was called Latine and it was a French word. In fact, they tried to argue that Latine was the more gender neutral term in Spanish, and I'm like... No. It's Latino. We're not French. lol

The general concept of Latin and Latino are different, Latino generally means those born in Latin America, while it can be argued that Latin/Latino are the same as well. On that point, it can be interpreted that Latino refers to Latin culture including the Latin language.

Spanish, French, Portuguese, Romanian, Italian, etc. Are all influenced by the origin of the Romance Language, Latin or Latin Vulgar.
