August 16 is celebrated in Paraguay as Children's Day, but this date marks a macabre event in the country's history.

On that day, the Battle of Acosta Ñu was fought, in which children and the elderly were the combatants facing the annihilation of Paraguayan troops.

That did not stop the allied army from being ruthless, leaving a "battlefield" strewn with children's bodies.

It is difficult to say who was more barbaric: the commander of the Paraguayan "troops," General Bernardino Caballero—who, coincidentally, was one of the few survivors of that battle and the war—or the Duke of Caxias, who, even seeing that his opponents were children and the elderly, did not hesitate to send his men into "battle." And not content with that, he ordered the burning of hospitals, churches, and the battlefield with wounded still alive.

Cowards survive everything, and later found political parties and become presidents during the postwar period. If Bernardino Caballero was not a traitor or an agent of the allies, he was a man with far too much "luck."
