Keep Talking

Have you ever had a conversation or a dialogue with someone and either you or the person had to say "Keep talking"?

You're just talking, you break a little and the person says "Keep talking". Would you continue talking? You would probably think the person wants you to keep going but in some cases the person actually means quite the opposite.

The words may sound friendly, but the tone tells a very different story, even the facial expressions says a different thing. You can usually hear the sarcasm in the speech, it’s sharp and mostly very obvious.

To tell whether the person wants you to actually keep talking or stop, you have to watch the face because the face gives all the clues. It's either a pretty tight smile, or a blank stare or a little bit of a raised eyebrow.

When you see someone you're talking to crossing their arms or looking away, trust me they’re not really inviting more talk.

If you’ve been talking for a while and they say keep talking, it might just be a warning to stop what you're saying or things could actually escalate. Keep talking could mean they’ve heard enough and want you to stop but they don't want to say it directly.

People usually use that phrase when they’re angry but they don’t want a fight. During an argument, keep talking might mean, you’re making it worse.

They usually use that when they feel disrespected. In moments like that, silence would help more than you spitting out more words. Sometimes it’s used at work when someone’s bragging or explaining too much.

The listener who suddenly says keep talking is a signal that you probably digging your own hole.

Your friends might use it jokingly, but still, the tone and facial expressions matter. Body language is a language, remember that.

If it's said with a nice smile, then maybe it can mean 'go on, this is funny". But check the smile very well, because people have deceptive smiles.

Bottom line is pay attention to mood, not just words from people talking to you. The main difference is that a real 'keep talking" sounds open and relaxed, but the fake 'keep talking" would feel cold or tense.

Also remember, when someone says it and then goes quiet, that’s your cue to just stop.
The best response to having a good dialog is to always pause, listen, and check their mood. You will avoid so many unnecessary arguments that don't profit you in anyway.
