Kyrie...

Happy weekend everyone!. It's been a while since I've been on Q-Inspired by Music, and it's not that I haven't felt inspired during this time. In fact, almost all of my posts have been related to music in some way, but I was on vacation, away from the stage. Today marks the end of the first week of rehearsals, and now a very interesting season is coming up for my choir. We will even be singing outside our borders again, but among all the new and sublime music we are preparing, there is one piece that has stayed in my mind since Monday...

Kyrie - Vicente Emilio Sojo

This Kyrie is only the first movement of a mass composed by Maestro Vicente Emilio Sojo, one of the most important musicians of the 20th century in Venezuela, who trained many of the maestros who today lead the music scene in our country. I was very surprised that at 37 years of age and with a lifetime of artistic experience in the choral world, neither my colleagues nor I were familiar with the Mass to Saint Efigenia and its powerful harmony and atmosphere with Renaissance and early Baroque influences.

This has made me reflect since the beginning of the week, because the music is really good, and today I can only share the requiem with you, because it is the only recording that exists. I have only been able to hear the Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei in our own voices once we read the music, and they are all wonderful. I can't believe that we sing music by such great and important artists, and that we don't know our own Venezuelan music, which, by the way, is of export quality.

That's why I wanted to start this post with this photograph I took a few days ago when I was walking down the street, not far from home, but I came across a church I had never seen before. It's called the Church of the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. I don't know anything about it, but its facade is imposing and at the same time neglected, located among ordinary buildings on an ordinary street, nothing special, and I immediately connected with the fact that this country has good music and that no choral or orchestral conductor does anything with their groups. I find it really sad. I feel like we abandon ourselves and exalt people from outside. I know it's not the case with everything, but there are many things that should be recognized and celebrated, and it doesn't happen.

But this story has a happy ending: the Vatican recognized two Venezuelans to be canonized on October 19. Dr. José Gregorio Hernández and Sister Carmen Rendiles will be the first Venezuelan saints, and the entire Catholic Church here is celebrating and eagerly awaiting the date. This Kyrie, and other pieces from this mass, will be heard in the Vatican on that day, and of course it will be broadcast worldwide thanks to television and the internet. This work will also have its moment, going from being unknown even to Venezuelan musicians to being a harmony heard by people all over the world. In fact, we will also sing it in Caracas at the celebration event being prepared for the days following the canonization. I don't know about you, but to me it seems like something big, and it reminds me once again that everything has its moment to shine. Even after death, a person's legacy can be eternal; all that is needed are respectful people who want to perpetuate it 🙏

This is really inspiring! It's amazing how such powerful music can be hidden for so long and then finally get the recognition it deserves. I'm excited that you and your choir get to be part of that moment.

Thanks, bro! You know I was about to ask you or your brother. Are you guys Catholic? Or do we have similar religions? I'm asking because I'm not sure, and I see that you believe in and love Jesus as much as I do, but it varies depending on the country...

You are welcome. Lol, I was never a Catholic though. I just have friends who are Catholic. Let say I am used to them that's why. And also I am a Christian also and I love God because he owns everyone of us.

¡Abrazos!

Indeed that Kyrie is lovely -- I was just listening to Bruckner's F minor mass, and that makes a beautiful next piece to listen to. It stands up right by Bruckner and could easily be better known.

Consider this. You are still a young man. Venezuela's music needs a champion. Suppose you are that champion? You see what needs to be done, but perhaps no one can do it like you can. On Hive you have made me to know the music of Maestro Sojo. Others will soon know because of the canonization. What often happens is that few are strong enough to think much of what they are doing if the world convinces them they do not matter, and my part of the world has a lot of influence and has been most unkind to Venezuela. But you know the value of your people's own art. You may need to believe and help others keep believing. This moment that is coming up -- make the most of it -- keep the fire burning as long as possible. Suppose you are the champion, and act accordingly, and see what happens!

Happy day my dear!, and sorry for responding so late, there has been a lot of choir work here. Twenty-two people from my choir were chosen to sing at the canonization in the Vatican on the 19th of this month. I am very excited about the new saints, about Venezuelan music being played in Italy, and about getting to know Rome. It's too much excitement. The gratitude I feel right now is beyond words 🙏

My friend, my respect @jesuslnrs . Now that I am taking my first steps in choir practice, I realise how difficult it is to be in a choir.

The songs from Masses and solemn ceremonies seem so beautiful to me, and it is incredible that, with such musical richness, we still do not know this. Regarding the images in your post, it goes without saying that I love the church and its architecture.

Hola preciosa!
