I give my money away as little as possible, but unfortunately most of it is on day to day bills, which Mom and Pops can't provide. I keep it as local as possible for food, but I feel I could do better there. One change I've made is keeping flower deliveries to family and friends in England local. It's through a middleman at the moment, but it's the first step. More expensive than bunches.co.uk, but they peed me off and pushed me to make that step, so I've got to thank them for that.
It's surprisingly hard to support Mom and Pops here. Every time I think I've found something they move, go under or the local stores stop supplying their product.
There is a war on the mom and pops.
It started here in the 80's with walmart's expansion to nearly everywhere.
One small town gave up their baseball field for a walmart that closed less then 3 years later.
The mom and pop grocery retired and told the people they did it to themselves.
Now they drive 15 miles to get groceries cheaper than convenience store prices.
I remember the corner shops slowly disappearing in the late 80s UK side. My mum used to walk into town every Saturday morning to the baker's, the greengrocer's and the butcher's, before the supermarkets started appearing everywhere.
