Instead of doing real work by contributing posts to be voted on, that scheme takes rewards by virtue of having more stake than others.

If somebody decides to give me an upvote, no third party has the right to come along for no reason whatsoever and steal that vote... That is arbitrariness... IMO...
We are playing a game here called 'the hive'.
Part of this game is upvotes, and downvotes.
IF you don't like how things are being run there is only one solution.
Buy more hive and power it up.
Until you have more stake weighted vote power than those that are keeping the current rules in place you will not get them changed.
The current rules say that you get to upvote and downvote for whatever reason, or no reason, up to you.
You do with your stake what you will.
As does everybody else.
Being a long term user, I would advise that this is one rule that will be terribly hard to change.
You can try, but I don't see it happening any time soon.
