There is a huge difference between searching for facts and satisfying our own personal need to justify our biased opinions. When we are searching for facts, we are looking for information that will help us to better understand the topic at hand. We may still have our own opinions, but we are willing to consider other points of view in order to come to a more informed conclusion. However, when we are satisfying our own personal need to justify our biased opinions, we are only looking for information that confirms what we already believe. We are not interested in considering other points of view, and we will likely ignore any evidence that does not support our views. Ain't that neat?!
